HOW FAST IS YOUR CHECKMATE? EVERYONE!

Borrowed a GPS today for the last run of the season.

'87 Merc 115 6-cyl
I was able to get 51.7 mph. (Quite Windy)
5600 to 5800 rpm
No jackplate
22P Michigan Wheel stainless

If the tach is correct, I might be able to go up in pitch.
Normal range is 5000-5500 per owner's manual.

What do you think??

if your tac was reading 5600 you are right on with your speed, assuming you have a 2:1 lower unit. i bet you could gain a couple mph with a 23P. those michigan wheel props are not too efficiant. try a laserII. many have had success with them on a predictor including myself.

That may be the fastest Checkmate ever!

speed

well I put my tri-mate 2 on the lake in July with a fresh power head . Well I didn't suspect my prop was bad it was a 24 pitch chopper well I gpsed at 49 one run the next time out the prop blew out, ( spinning the hub inside the prop ) and she tached out at 8,500rpm for a split sec as fast as I could throttle down well damage was done I lost compression on 2 cylinders and now my fresh rebuild is a boat anchor. ( I'm in surch of a bare block if anyone has one please email me at Greghi65@aol.com ) shakeing it off can't tell props are bad some times by the naked eye. Chalk one up for a learning experiance lol , back to the build up stand . Reed ( I'm going with a 26 pitch cleaver next try )

 My 1992 22ft persuader has the 454mag 385hp fresh rebuild this summer. Im running a 3blade 24pitch quicksilver prop, also a 24 pitch 4blade mirage, bennet trim tabs. I need 4 adults in the boat to keep the boat in the water, running fully loaded with gas, 4 adults on board, small chop on the water, im pushing 76mph on the speedometer . It will probably go faster but it chime walks if i push it more than that. looking at maybe adding a single arm hydraulic steering this winter and see if that will help. I havent ran the boat yet on the gps, still playing with props ect.. the 24pitch that im running ive got some throttle left, and im running at 5100 rpm. So i may try to jump up to a 3blade 25 pitch next summer.

Went out this morning to flush the boat out from last nites salt water run. The motor has something going on the power is intermitent but running strong this morning,im thinking plug wires or a carb problem but for what ever reason a new topspeed number appeard on the gps. 87 starflite,12"set back,1 1/2"below the V 87 yamaha Excel 25p trophy plus with no ring on 74.3 mph.

New Results

Emptied all the family crap out of the boat this weekend. 3/8 tank of fuel 26p Bravo 1 4950 rpm 72.5 GPS with just me in the boat. Amazing to me for this size of boat with only a stock 525 SC, 490hp with Lightning headers. I am going to remove the drive spacer this week and see what happens.

Dual plug heads

Nice setup, the 200xp is actually 225 hp stock(Evenrude's bass boat motor) did you check compression numbers before and after? will it still run on pump gas?

Panther 150, 93 octane minimum with the dual plug heads, fuel quality was very critical. Siezed up no 6 cylinder on a bad batch of fuel (water in fuel):pissed: . I removed the heads and now they are a wall ornament in my garage I cannot take the chance of getting a crappy load of fuel again and spending another 2k in just parts to get her on the water again. The heads just allowed me to carry more passengers and still run the same topend, which running at those speeds I really was the only one that needed to be in the boat! It was a blast to drive tho, really snappy responce. :bigthumb: Stock compression on that motor is 95 psi with the heads it was 120psi.

Thanks for the info Costa

Thanks Costa, I'm trying to learn all I can about these OMC's . I've go an 89 evenrude special edition 225 with solid mounts, nosecone ,reeds and relieved offshore ehaust with the housing on the midsection I can open or close with two screws on the sides. It sounds like a bridgeport with it open.I'm still running the stock low compression, but can run regular gas. I'm running a 26 p raker prop I got with the motor right now, but look forward to trying a few different props in the spring. The motor I bought came off an 18ft Charger DL and although I think I've got my boat going about the same speed it did, the midrange acceleration is'nt as good . On the test ride before I bought it, we came into a bay out on Haliberton Lake at 5000rpm and about 70mph, the guy nailed it , the tach jumped to six grand nearly pushing me over the front seat.I don't know if this was just prop/setup or the fact the Charger may have been a lighter boat.

Panther, There is not alot you can do to the rudes to get more top end without modding the internals. They really dont like anything over 6000rpm. May people have told me not to run it over 6k for more than 1 minute unless I want my internals to become externals!! To get more power your best bet would be to get in touch with Monte at www.montyracing.com he is the best in the country at modding reliable OMC's. I really love the sound of open exhaust on an outboard!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sounds like you have a sweet motor-:bigthumb: what kind of mate is she running on?

Convincor 25 1987
Stock 454/330hp, 1.50:1, Ballistic 23.
57mph (GPS) with severe porpoising problems :(

I think the prop is totally wrong in the issue of porpoising?!

Next year i'm going to try with a 22p Bravo (4BL)

The engine is going to get an Edelbrock Performer Intake manifold and a Holley
4150 squarebore double pumper 750CFM to improve its characteristics.I don't think i'm going to get much higher in topspeed with theese upgrades but hopefully i'll get higher cruisingspeed and also get rid of the porpoising.
