I jioned the trouble club!

Well I thought I had 2 good trouble free outings.

Now I think otherwise. Lower unit problems have arrived.
I cannot engage reverse fully. When the linkage is all the way back
(control cable disconnected) I can rotate the prop with the gears
jumping in and out of connection. Forward is fine, it locks up positive.
I can't find an adjustment where the linkage connects to the shift rod.

Other than a blown lower reverse gear, what else can it be.

Yes the only adjustment is thru the cable, if you can't get reverse thru just the linkage, then I would agree looks like trouble....by the way I have to apologize I gave you wrong info on the rotation of the foot, I didn't realize the one I was looking at was a counter rotating foot...

I have an appointment at the local OMC dealer first thing tomorrow morning. He says that if the shifter dog and reverse gear are chewed up
I may as well do a complete rebuild before I grenade the whole lower unit. I just don't know if he can have it ready by Saturday morning. I was supposed to go up to the St. Lawerence River on the Canadian border early Friday mroning for a 10 day vacation. That is why I have been working hard all winter to get the boat ready.

No sense in going up if I don't have the boat. Just have to wait another year to get a vacation. Bummer!

I have run my for several years without reverse, without issues. Run it like it is till end of summer. Mine had the same issue and it was the gears/clucth dogs and it's the second time on an older 200 Evinrude.

I am not the type to let anything cause me trouble. I do like security
when I am out on the water. Can't just get out and walk away.
Hate having the wind blow me into rocks etc.

Just call me "Old reliable". I'm just a problem.

The prop will always jump out or ratchet one way. when its in reverse, does the prop ratchet in both directions?

Yes it did. Would not come close to engaging. It spun free in both directions with a little engage tapping.

When disassembled they found the pinion gear was missing a tooth.
The shifter dog was worn over as well as the ring gear. Metal filings
on both drain plud magnets. Several shims were badly worn and scored.

There was plenty of oil in the gear case.

The PO said the lower unit was rebuilt only a few years ago. He was a bass master fisherman. That means the motor was run at WOT most of the time. Possibly always at the 6000 rpm limit.

New parts have arrived and it will be done for Friday afternoon.

Got the boat back today. The lower unit has had a complete rebuild.

I will test it out all next week. Please don't ask how much it cost to make it right. Lets just say I am walking a bit lighter tonight.

I was told to keep the rpm's under 4000 for 4 to 5 hours, then drain and refill the gear lube. This will be a pleasure.

Now I can go on my vacation. I thought I would have to cancel for the lack of a operational boat. The dealer got it done in 4 days including waiting for the parts. He came thru like a champ. Something I wasn't expecting. I guess there are still some dealers that keep there word.

Good to hear JT, enjoy your time off. Post some pictures when you get back.:thumb:

Took the oil that was drained from the lower unit after 6 hours of running,
back to the dealer as he requested. He wants me to bring the boat back.
He said he didn't like the color of the oil. He thinks that some water got into the gear case. He wants to drain the oil I put in and check to see what that looks like. :shakehead:

I guess, it never ends. I won't get excited until I hear bad news.

That's terrible! I hope it's under warrenty still? That would ease the Pain a little. Hope he just jumped the gun on his diagnosis! Good Luck.:rof:

It should be covered, he did it 2 weeks ago. Since he told me to bring it back that shows he is interested correcting anything that may be a problem.
