Well-known member
so i was on the checkmate-boats facebook page a little bit ago and came across a pic if a very sharp 251.....

i have seen this before but this pic got me thinking, what material is used to "mirror" the bottom of the engine hatch? i guess i never thought of this question before.....
i might want to do something like this to mine if its not a real pain in the a$$.

by the way, i'm not sure if the boat owner is a member on here but that boat looks to be in GREAT shape:cheers::thumb:

Its plexiglass. Comes in mirrored colors too. Goes on with adesive that will bond it to the hatch. Simple as cuting it and sticking it.

Found the pic of the firewall my neighbor made. He used a scrap door off some kind of comercial kitchen cabinet. He cut it out and sanded and polished the crap out of it. Also he welded it in, the firewall had to be moved back to fit that engine in. You can not tell that its not a mirror.

Nice idea.. My Senator has a hole in fiberglass so the spark arrestor has room to fit.. The carb stud was digging into the plywood.. I was doing the interior over with new wood.. A fellow checkmater said, to cut a hole in the ply to match the hole in the hatch and put a sheet of something over that hole for clearance.. I used a aluminum street sign and buffed the hell out of it ( close to a mirror ).. When the interior is done there will be pics...:sssh:
P.S. Thanks John :thumb:

I build a lot of stuff for the air force that gets put on planes, so weight is a big issue with what we build. When something has to be mirrored, we use mirrored Lexan. its super light, and super easy to work with. I just use a hydraulic sheer to cut it and you can even put it into a break or slip roller and bend it. Pretty neat stuff. Lots lighter and probably lots cheaper than stainless. And goes on with 3M adhesive.

Phooie on all that. I'm of the racing school where 'fluff' simply means extra weight and something else to break. :D
Seriously, if you have a pretty engine and always leave the hatch up, then i suppose it's cool. Personally, it's 'show w/o the go', so you won't find that on my boat.

ross dont use mirrored lexan unless you get the mar resistant version which is very pricey the other stuff will scratch if you look at it wrong and then you need to use special cleaners for it you can actually buy stainless sheetmetal in a mirrored polish finish if you want i will check on prices for both of them with the stainless you can glue it up using a hi bond or similar countertop adhesive with the lexan i would use more screws the glue tends to pull the mirrored finish off of the back of the plastic either way they are both relatively easy to work with

I get a polished aluminum blanks for signs...looks real nice..not to pricey or heavy and can't break..
