New Owner of 81 Diplomat

81Diplomat

New member
Hello everyone,

I stumbled across this forum while looking for information on a new to me '81 Diplomat that is in great condition. It has been kept in a heated garage for it's entire life, and it shows. It's powered by what I believe is an early 80's 115 Mercury outboard. I'm not that familiar with Mercs; therefore, I could be wrong. The finish is as good as I've seen. I believe a polish and wax will be all she needs to sparkle. Floor and Transom are solid with no cracks in the glass. Carpet has no tears or frays. Trailer is Pristine.

But, the vinyl is dry and cracked/splitting. Let me know what you think about my new Mate.

:welcome: Welcome to the Forum. She definitely looks like she's in great shape and been well taken care of. I love the color combo. Congratulations on your purchase.:thumb: Jim

There are lots of people willing to help.
And welcome to the forum

Well preserved survivor, My first Checkmate had that color scheme. One suggestion, get a summer or two out of the 115, about then you'll be looking for more, start saving your pennies now and look for a similar preserved V-6 135 or 150 or go for it with a 200:eyecrazy:. Congrads and have fun with it. Merc245 :p :eyecrazy:

That is the plan, enjoy her for a couple years. I will replace vinyl first, but will be on the lookout for little more power.

Anybody know a good upholstery person in KY or somewhere near? I'm talking with Kip at Checkmate about a new interior or skins. It's a little pricey, but not terrible.

Nice!

Congrats, looks really clean. I bought a starliner recently and was going to do nothing to it.... I put a new motor on it, new cover and steering, all of which was really not needed but hey its all fun. Enjoy the boat and working on it and doing stuff to it is half the fun.

Well, My boat seems to be popular locally. I have been offered my money back with a healthy profit by two individuals so far. Of course they will be nowhere to be found if I ever decide to sell it. That's how it always works for me.
