Oil Injection good or bad

Do I want to do away with the oil injection on my 1988 v6 135 merc and mix the gas ?? I don't want to smoke the motor because of an oil pump problem. Also what is the max RPM I need to shoot for when I do the set-up. Thanks !!

The manual has the rpm range for the 135 at 5000-5500.
I would remove the oil injection and mix my own. It takes a bit longer to fill up. But cheeper than a smoking a motor.

As long as you can promise yourself to NEVER forget to mix the oil in the gas, then I'd remove it.

Or, do what Inline Six recommends, and keep the oil injection and change the parts out every so often.

J.W. and Gus thanks. I'm new at this and I don't want to have any problems. How is the boat going Gus. Will it be ready for next summer?

If you are running a stock motor and stay within the rpm limits I would retain the oil injection. Preventative maintanance is the key. Make sure the pump is checked each season. If you plan on modifying the motor and run in excess of 5500 rpm you may want to pre mix your gas/oil.

i kept mine on my 200 for the first half of the season till the tank cracked in two. it spilled out 3 gal of oil in the boat.

i didnt know it was cracked until i kicked on the bilge. it looked like a mint smoothie pouring out.

after i took it all off, the motor seems to run a bit smoother.

thats my dollar worth.

Thanks, I think I will just mix the gas by hand rather than risk having a problem.

http://www.rickracers.com has the mercury made "kit" in stock to eliminate the oil injection for about $10.... Just make sure you get your tank fuel to 50:1 BEFORE you change over the system so you have OIL in the fuel FIRST! Jim.

I see you guys talking about unhooking the oil injection, which sounds like a good idea. But im guessing since i have efi i can not do this.

Brade007... YES, you can remove it from an EFI motor as well, I can get you the complete step by step info >OR< you can get it from the http://www.screamandfly.com site... search for posts by a screen-name "PYRO"... then a key word search on "oil injection removal". He (pyro) did a real nice write up on everything you need to do on the EFI motor... It's simple and as long as YOU remember to mix the oil with the gas... it's SAFER!!! Jim
