Story about Checkmate Boats, Inc.

Doesn't anyone remember that Checkmate and Baja used to build some boats togeher? That is why some of the Late 70's Baja look to be rwin's of Checkmate. Baja used to be a completely different boat until Brunswick got a hold of them. Brunswick buys boat manufacturers and troes to turn them into car companies. They even went so far as to hire their pres. of the Marine market from the auto business. THey will never be able to build boats like cars.

I thought the story of Baja was that they started out building boats using old Mate moulds. Sorta like Quinn's marine did in Canada with the Panthers. Kip where are you?

I heard that also, old mate molds, but as I said they must have done something very wrong. Where are the old Baja's.

Maybe Kip or someone can give the story about Baja. My understanding is Baja purchased old molds from Checkmate to get their start.

Hey Z06,

I think you hit a nerve at Bajunk. Everyone go to Z06 link to bajunk and check it out.

You know how to start s..t

Awesome job

Thanks. Glad your enjoying it. I just tell them that I'm not trying to stir-up sh*t and they keep the thread open. I just hate their stupid comments. They said that new blue and Yellow ZT picture was a crime scene between a school bus and a smurf. I didn't find that one funny or calling JW's Pulsare a 70's model

Kip is best to tell the story. They told me when I was down there, but I do not want to mis-quote anybody. I am going aff of memory, which is not always good!

INTERESTING THREAD BOYS AND GIRLS!! BUT THE FACTS ARE CLEARLY SIMPLE; ANY BOAT MANUFACTURER THAT HAS LONGEVITY (CHECKMATE, CIGARETTE, SONIC, ELIMINATOR, ETC.) OR THE ABILITY TO BUILD AND SELL MANY BOATS WITH REASONALBE QUALITY (FOUNTAIN, BAJA, VELOCITY, HUSTLER, ETC) OR CAN TRUELY DELIVER SOMETHING SPECIAL THAT ALSO PERFORMS WELL (ACTIVE THUNDER, OUTERLIMITS, MTI, DOUGLAS SKATER,TALON, ETC.) MUST ALL BE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT!! :thumb: STOP WITH ALL THE BASHING AND ENJOY THE PRODUCTS FOR WHAT THEY ARE... SOMETHING TO HAVE FUN IN, BE PROUD OF, ENJOY TINKERING WITH, SPEND TIME WITH FAMILY MEMBERS BOATING, RACE, CRUISE, EXPLORE, SHARE KNOWLEDGE, AND ALWAYS ANTICIPATE THE ENJOYMENT OF BUYING YOUR "NEXT" BOAT; WHATEVER IT MAY BE. :bounce:

checkmate and baja boats

let me try to fix what i wrote. there are alot of nice boats out there, but what really counts in my apinion is the quality of a boat, inside and out. have you ever watched checkmate or baja build there boats. there`s a big difference. i`m no xpert at talking about boats ,but i do know some.everyone has there own way and taste of building boats. what ever style it may be. i just like the old way. just like a car. they don`t make them like they use to. the old fashion way. that`s what makes checkmate a good boat. there still built the old way, which makes it a nice strong boat, that last. sure you have to do upkeep on them, just the same as you have to anything. if it`s a car, boat, house, whatever it may be.what ever you buy is by your choice. enjoy it while you have it. oh yell! i think checkmate did get baja started. :cheers

checkmates reputation

I had a friend who owned the "BASSMATE" fishing boat. he cracked the transom, called CHECKMATE. they said bring it to us here in Ohio and we'll fix it. not only did they fix it bit they removed everything, engine, controls, the works and redipped it in the mold. new Green metal flake paint and everything. now this was in the 70's, can't remember the exact year.
Let me say something about Checkmate. i've owned three, getting ready to buy the 4th one.( i know about Fountains, Donzi's Cigerette's, etc....) there isn't a better boat company out there. I've looked at Checkmates since 1971, can you imagine walking into a dealer and he has the MX16( i think it was the 16) in black metal with a big inline 6 Merc on the back with trailer to match! thats the stuff that grabs you and keeps you coming back for more, that was 1971.
just a little note about a great company, i remember lots of company's that are no longer in the business.

have a good one
