Time to pick a motor V131

I am at a point where several good deals on motors have presented themselves for powering my V131 project. The motors are all under $200 bucks each with good compression and are all built in or before the 70's. The choices are Chrysler 75 hp, Chrysler 35 hp, Merc 40 hp, Evenrude 30 hp and Sea King 25. Any initial thoughts? I am working on exact years and model numbers for each. Thanks for the input. Oh and top speed isn't my primary concern because it's only a 13 foot boat and the guy who will be driving it is an inexperienced boater. Thanks

Just my opinion I have always thought a boat looks the best with a mercury on the back . Both my boats have Merc's on them and I wouldnt have it any other way
 
My other boat has a Merc 70 and I like it also but the Chrysler has more power (than the Merc 40) and I don't know if they (Chryslers) are any good or not by nature.

I wish I could answer your question about the chrysler but I dont know anything about them . I havent even seen one in a very long time .
 
I have never heard anything good about a chrysler but then again never heard bad about them either. Its always "uhhhh there alright". Keep in mind parts avab for either motor you chose. Its no good if you cant get parts anymore as everyone knows you will eventually have to work on it. I would say its easier to find parts for the merc or the rude.

Merc , Evinrude, Chrysler and Sea king. in that order I would say. I have worked on them all.
The Sea king by Chrysler was made for monkey wards, real junk,
But for that price if you got a couple season or more out of any of them they would owe you nothing. You could throw it away and hang a new one.

I had a 1968 75hp Evinrude on a 14' hydroswift in my shop a few months ago.
The owner said it hadn't ran in 7 years and he just bought it. It had comppression and good spark
I rebuilt the carbs and changed the impeller and lube. it started right up.
The guy came back to buy some 2-stroke oil said it runs fine. been fishing out of it 6-times.

Well, dont take this the wrong way, but I am a firm believer you get what you pay for.
 
I agree, you do get what you pay for. However there are other sayings I like such as "diamond in the rough" or "1 mans trash is another mans treasure" I have half a dozen motors to go look at this weekend if I can fight off this cold I am getting. I just sold an old 30 hp evenrude for $80 so that ups my budget a bit. I am trying not to spend any real money on the project because I may end up giving it to my friend when it's done.
 
Depends on the year, I can supply most parts for these engines. some stuff is NLA.

There are still carb kits, ignition parts, Impellers, stuff that might go out.

Ron Baker Sr. won a LOT of races in Hydrostreams pushed by Chrysler motors.
 
Get whatever is easiest to get parts for. Hunting hard to find parts in the short summers is no fun. BTW, I spent my youth trying to destroy a monkey wards 6 hp (chrysler) on the rowboat and a '79 chrysler 700 skier 70 hp on our Tri-hull Chrysler boat, I was unsuccessful on both counts. I think we ran those motors every day WOT May thru Sept for years.
 
I amazes me how they keep going. I just repaired a 1976 9.9 hp Chrysler sea king for a guy. The pull starter assy. blew up and it had no spark in one coil. I found parts for it and it ran fine. The guy picked it up today. The components sure look cheap compared to a merc or a Johnson/Evinrude.

I picked up a motor today. Haven't ran the number yet but I was told it is a mid to late 60's Evinrude V-4 75 H.P. It started on the engine stand and shifted freely. It has a 22" shaft but I can either use the adapter plate I got with the 131 or I was told that the intermediate section on this motor can be easily removed to make it a short shaft. Pics to come. Paid $100 with controls. Any comments?
 
Had a 73 85hp V4 on my baja scat cat. Good running motor. Hard as hell to start when cold........starting fluid every time. After it ran for 3 minutes it would start easy every time for the rest of the day.
 
Here is the motor. Model number is 75393 and serial number is E070874. The original cover was lost but this one fits.
