To Eco-Boost, or not to Eco-Boost!?

I have a few friends that bought them, unless you get the lower rear gear, they did not tow well at all, and the gas mileage was never close to what was claimed...but the claimed was a 2wd with the high gearing, personally I do think engine life will be less as "boost" is putting much more stress on parts...I race a turbo drag race car and can tell you it's tuff on parts !! A good friend of mine was a service director for a large ford dealer and compaired the ECO vs 5.0 several times as his demo's said they both got the same mileage and the 5.0 towed much better...personally I would drive the new LT1 GM....

2 of my buddys bought new Eco's this year, they have had no issues and love them.
I love the interiors in the Lariat packages and above. I seriously considered one last month, but decided V-8 sound was for me, so I went back to GM, and got a Sierra with the 6.2 :)
I still love my 8100......mostly because it is paid for! Just the sound of it scares Ford's out of my way....

At least I have that getting the same mileage as all the HD's with the doggy 6.0. But with a little computer work, the 6.0 gets great mileage and runs like a Kenyan.

Yea, I still miss my duramax every time I drive my 8100. Still no comparison. I can pull just as much, just not nearly as fast or as fun!

The Ram diesel 1500 should be out in a few months, maybe you should look at that also.

I always bought GM trucks for years and then I switched to a Ram Hemi a year or so ago and it's the best truck I've owned so far. The 5.7L gets better gas mileage versus any of my GM trucks I had, the interior is one of the nicest around and the Hemi pulls like a freight train and has a sweet sound when you get into the throttle. Also, it rides like a frickin' Mercedes sedan.

I would take one for a test drive if you haven't.

I myself might look at the diesel 1500 models when they come out and see if trading and getting one of those makes sense.

Chris, a lot of the work I do is at the Warren Truck Assembly Plant, and I have heard about the new 1500 diesel. It looks to be pretty sweet, and I think it is a great fit for a 1/2 ton truck. I would be going with a RAM if I didn't have the issue of back seat room. I do drool over them everytime I walk by them in the plant:drool:

The buddy I work with has the Supercrew and it is like a damn limo in the back seat. I am a big guy (6'4") and I can sit in the back and have plenty of room in front of me. It's also a flat floor in the back and with a 10 year old boy who is only getting bigger, a golden retriever, and most likely a new rug-rat on the way, I need all the room I can get!

I have always been a V8 guy. I love the Hemi, the power and sound. The reliability of the Chevy 5.3 has been great (my former 2004 had 210000 on it and still didn't miss a step), and I love that 5.0 Coyote (had one in my 2011 GT mustang...God I miss that car!) and the sounds it makes. But for everyday driving, throwing the family in and hooking up to the boat...I was thinking the ecoboost would be the best option. Some of you gents have me second guessing and I might just go with the 5.0L option and run with it. A nice Roush exhaust would make me smile too!!!

Thanks to everyone for the input!

dan have you looked at the ram crew cab? the crew cab has just about the same room as the other four door trucks if not more. the "crew cab" version is what they used to call the mega cab. but the do still offer the quad cab version which has less rear leg room.

That is quite nice. I m a Chevy guy and that truck looks alot like my Black Shorty I drive for my business truck every day. I will be looking into that truck and see if I can persuade myself to commit to a truck payment. Very nice Dave .Thanks

I think I have seen these, and if it's the right one I am thinking of I believe that option is only for the heavy duty trucks. And the worst thing is, I don't think it would fit in my garage (i know, stupid, anal, etc...):rof:

The 1500 crew cab is big, and the interiors in my opinion are the nicest, but they just don't have the room the ford does. It will be another 6-8 months before I make the move, so my mind might change...that 1500 RAM diesel does sound enticing:sssh:

As far as "Boost" goes, diesels run boost all the time and some brands go 300,00 miles. If it is built for boost, it will take it! Keeping your foot out of it too will keep the boost low.

;)

Turbo charge = 40% boost in power but 40% less in expected life of motor.
I'm a tech at a large Ford dealer. I wouldn't worry about the boost hurting the engine. The ecoboost is not just the 3.5 with a turbo. It has totally different pistons and crank and is built specifically for the turbo. We dont hardly ever have internal problems with engines (cranks/rods/pistons/rings) anymore.I've seen some cat convertors go bad on the ecoboost and some other minor things. We seem to have more people complain about the fuel mileage in the winter as compared to the summer. Colder air is thicker which means it needs more fuel to keep the air/fuel ratio correct. That's true on all vehicles, but it seems to affect the ecoboost a lil more than N/A engines.Their good motors, as is the all new 5.0.

Ram actually has 3 different 4 door cabs. The crew cab and the mega are 2 different cabs. The quad cab has 2 large front doors and 2 smaller rear doors with a 6ft+ bed. The crew cab has 4 full size doors and a 5ft+ bed. The mega cab has 4 full size doors and an extended cab area behind the back seat, but I am pretty sure this is only available on the heavy duty's.

I looked it up and the ford F150 super crew has 43.5" of rear leg room and the ram 1500-3500 crew cab has 40.3" of rear leg room so you are right there is about 3.2" difference. what is interesting is the super duty has 42.1" of rear leg room and ram 3500 mega cab has 34.7" of rear leg room. Chevrolet 1500 is 40.93" of rear leg room and a 3500 has 39".
