Transom problems

hey im looking to buy a 21 enchanter and i found one but it says the transom needs to be strengthen. So what kind of work would have to be done??

That could be a little work or a major problem. If it came loose then there was water that got in to the wood and rotted it. Not a good thing.
It can be fixed but it will take time and $$.
See the topic trimate overhaul. Thats a bad transom.

"Can we fix it? Yes we can?",Bob the builder.

oh. well the boat is a 1984 and its been sitting for a year, the guy says its got a 1987 johnson 225 with a nose cone low water pick up, drilled out exhaust, ss 24 pitch prop and a 12" jack plate so do you think the tourqe from the motor could have done the damage?

Possibly...Old boat with some rot starting plus big motor. I say it didn't help it any. I'd say unless the price is real good keep shopping there are lots of Enchanters for sale.

alright say i go and look at this boat... knowing the transom has seen its better days, what kind of things could i do to figure out what kind of fix it is? Or would that have to be a rip the floor up job and see what it looks like? and how if the trasom it self is shot how can i test that?

For a grand or less? Motor and Trailer should be worth that. Use a Scratch Awl or an Ice pick to poke around the areas you think might be damaged or rotten. Also poke around areas of the floor near the seats and areas like that looking for soft wood. But for a grand or less. Nice trailer, running motor, hey Free boat.
Also get a rubber mallet and tap all over the transom. You will be listening for spots that sound wrong or just different. If he just broke the transom knees loose then that can be fixed fairly easily.

The damage was more than likly caused by the 12" setback and big omc.
Hook the trailer to something so it does'nt move.
Then trim the engine down abit and try to puchdown and lift the lower unit. Watch for movement in the transom. It may take a 2rd person. But if its soft it will show.
Trailer and motor are worth more than a $1000.

I'm be all over it for a thousand. I could use a motor and at least 2 trailers right now. Do like my dad does by the vehicle with the big motor and take it off or out. Put it in the vehicle with the small motor that hasn;t been hurt. He has a 57 Chevy that originally had a six cylinder in it. Sold that on ebay. Then put a 454 in it and tubbed the rear end.

I just looked through all my brochures and could not find a horsepower listing for the Enchanter. But found them for smaller boats. So that motor should be fine for the boat.

I think mine is rated for 225HP. A 200 set up correctly is a good match, you should be able to 70+ out of it.
F150GT

oops I just looked back on the tread and see you are looking at a 225HP, That should not exceede the rating and will do a nice job on her. If the engine runs, go for it.

alright guys thanks.. i talked to the kid again trying to get some more info on this boat.. knowing its got a 225 and such a big jack plate that whats did the damage, he said that you can see the support that broke if you lift the back seat up. all the seats are in poor condition needing reulpostering, the boat has a canvas but i dont know how good of cond. it is in and its also needs new gaugues. and the boat does not have a trailer...

im not sure if this boat is worth it, his asking price is $1000 but if he would come down on his price then i dunno ill see if i can post the pics so what do you guys think is this boat even worth a grand??

im just worried that if im crusin down the CT river and i jump a wave that transom is gonna break off and ploop there goes my motor and boat right to the bottom
