Which is better? I/O or outboard

O would have to go with an O/B,
1, fewer parts to break
2, More interior room
3, able to raise the X demension with a $200 plate.
4, Lighter weight. Smaller tow vehical
5, Cost

Just a few.
 
Aren't the inboards engines much stronger and more reliable and cheaper to maintain? I have heard that outboards can be super expensive to repair when they break, but, the inboards are like car engines and parts can be acquired inexpensively.

I like em both but lean towards an I/O.The ones I've owned have always had V8's in them.A 350 or 454,they're easy to work on.And they sound great!
 
This is always a great debate.......think their are more O/B guys on this site than I/O guys....we'll see. Always cool to hear guys reasoning on this debate. To me it's easy.....O/B's are funner to drive ...I/O's better in ruff water and easier to work on. Good topic!
 
There is no better all around way. It depends on what your doing. To me, o/b are good because the motors can easily be changed, and you can upgrade with no problems. To me I think of an i/o as more of a "pig" that goes relatively slow for the amount of hp they have. So for me o/b=speed, i/o=family hauler. IMHO
 
FIRST OF ALL MX-13, CALLING AN I/O A "PIG" ON THIS SITE CAN GET YOU ALL KINDS OF FLACK AND HAVING AN I/O DOES NOT MEAN THE BOAT WOULD BE SLOW. THE FASTEST OFFSHORE BOATS IN THE WORLD RUN I/O'S. AS FAR AS WHICH ONE IS BETTER IS PERSONAL CHOICE. THEY BOTH HAVE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES. CHRIS SHOULD SET UP A VOTE JUST LIKE THE "BOAT OF THE MONTH" THREAD. COULD BE INTERESTING TO SEE WHAT THE PUBLIC THINKS!!

Relax Jupiter, by pig I meant high weight, high horsepower, and relatively slow. It's kinda l ike comparing a camaro to a cadillac. I didn't mean it as something negative. And yes, a lot of performance i/o's are a lot slower then then performance o/b's, thats just the way it is.
 
MX-13.. YOU NEED TO READ UP ON TODAYS CADILLAC. YOU CAN CURRENTLY BUY A 400 HP CADILLAC,
SOON A 600HP ONE.. CAMARO NEVER HAD THAT KIND OF POWER FROM THE FACTORY

NOW BACK TO THE I/O vs O/B... I agree with JUPITER it's a matter of personal choice
You're right about being able to unbolt one O/B and bolt on a bigger one. Now HP increases on O/B's mean switch motors or tear down and build up. I/O's on the other hand, can see signigicant HP increases with bolt on stuff. Most I/O guys can build a roaring 400+HP for less than that O/B guy will pay for 225 or 275.

Have you ever seen a 1300 HP outboard?...

Once again.. To each his own.. I'm an I/O guy that had O/B's, I have no desire to go back
You might like that screaming sound of an O/B. I prefer the rumble of a V8
When was the last time you heard an O/B from a mile away.. V8's ?

No, simply because there not needed. O/b's will always be faster with less horsepower. Thats the only point I'm trying to get across. You guys can bash me all you want but thats the truth. I'm not making fun of i/o's, just saying they have their place. Hell my dad has an i/o. I think the biggest disadvantage of an o/b is like kip said, most can't handle rough like i/o's, and you can't haul around 6 people and notice hardly any difference.

Gus has some good points to support outboard guys. Some guys just have their preferences. I have a friend that bought a 32 Scarab I/O with no power and converted it to Twin 275's. He reconstructed the entire back of the boat and mounted the engines on brackets. He gained a real nice wrap around seat with a table and a sun deck
 
I like the outboard because it's easier for a fat guy to work on...when you're old and fat it's harder to work on an inboard for winterizing, drain plugs and hoses, etc...with an outboard it's all outside. With my two stroke...no oil to change is a plus also. But, you can't beat the sound of a big block... routine maintence is one thing to consider in the mix when making a choice...
 
Personaly I would rather have a single outbaord for speeds around 100mph, not that i am saying a mate that will go that fast, but never the less. Power to weight ratio is were its at, pound for pound you can't bet an outboards perf. But on the other hand big blocks sound nice, and can be more durable. Love that two stoke smoke.

put me down as an outboard guy.i like the lightness of the overall package. flying it or towing it. and the versitility of jackplates in new areas.

Oh you should hear mine. A mile away no problem.

i like outboards because you can raise it with a jackplate in low areas and because they are better on fuel.. at least the ones i have owned
