Yellowfiero's playmate resto!

I got her out today and did a little sanding and buffing on it! it looks amazing compared to what it did. I had to go real aggressive with it with the mindset of "if I screw it up, its going to get repainted this winter" So I started off with 600 dry!! From there, I went to 1000 wet, 1500 wet, then final sand with 3000 wet. Hit her with the buffer and let her shine! I do have 2 spots I am unhappy with, both are on the rear sides of the cap. The port side is not so bad, just a little bit of red flake that is now silver but the starboard side had runs not in the clear but in the base so I ended up sanding through the paint. The boat looks good enough I might not repaint it, but just touch up that area if it does not sell.

Well she is without power again. Will be bolting up a 60 mariner here soon :thumb: Should be weird driving it with that small motor on back ;)

Updates as soon as I start back on it:D

If I could figure out the drive setup, I might keep it and make it happen. Not a fan of 4 cyl sounds, but imagine that thing throwing the smack down on big boat and turning 11,000rpm. A big ol' set of K-planes on her. Custom paint. Etc, Etc, Etc!!! Wonder what drive could hole up to that abuse and rpm input.... Maybe some kind of surface drive???

WOW, did you bring back some great memories. My first speedboat was a 13' GW Invader. Looks a lot like this checkmate. She had a 90 on her when I bought it. I got rid of that, and put the biggest motor merc had back in the day, which was a 150. That thing was dangerous. At full power she would walk on water, only the engines cavitation plate was in the water. I have some pictures of her if you are interested. I did have to have the transom strengthened, to take that power as the plate on the boat said it was rated for a max of 65hp. The transom had a natural step up on it of 6 inches, but I added a jack plate. That boat was an accident looking to happen on the water, but she was fun to drive. People use to just steer at her, because of how huge the engine looked, compared to her size. As I said, she was my first speedboat, and the introduction of how women love to go out on fast boats, ha ha ha. We lived on the water on the servern River in Maryland, and our community had 3 private beaches. I use to put it in at the beach, and pull up on the sand, and then just go lay down on the beach, and watch the people come over to look at her. The whole hull was heavy blue metal flake. When I would see a good looking lady looking, I would get up and go over to get something out of the boat, and that would start the conversation with her, and next thing you know, we were out on the water. Yup. I love boating. If you want, I think I still have some pictures of her.The boat I mean. ha ha.
Dan
PS, good luck with your restoration.

Wrap

Hey Yellow, you pick that up recently around Cincy? I think I saw it on CL. Pretty cool boat. If you decide to do a wrap, I have a real close friend that owns Hygh Octane Graphics that specializes in wraps. He's out of Indy but is here in Cincy all the time. If you follow my resto on here, you'll see it on my boat in the next couple months. He's going to wrap the entire top half of mine. He's looking at getting into the boat market more.

Looks like a fun project, and a little easier than the one I have! Have fun with it!

Jeff

Randy, aka "Gunflint" is going to be the new owner. Everything is a go so I might as well let it out. I got all the troops rallied together for a quick rebuild of it. Getting stripped down and a fresh new custom "checkmate designed graphics" will be sprayed on using base coat/clear! I have to get on the ball and get him the final drawing with color so he can check off on it. I will keep all posted with updates and lots of pics!

Nice!!! Can't wait to see how it turns out

Got it pulled out of the garage today. Took it out to where its going to be stripped. I got it all derigged, off the trailer, and flipped over! The internet is dead at the house so I am sitting in my neighbors body shop updating! I think this is a sickness:D!! I plan on chemical stripping below the rub rail tomorrow so there is no chance the new paint will react to the old. This will take it down to the original gel and not harm that. Plus it should be easier than sanding all them runs out of the hull! If things go well, I hope to have it back upright and on the trailer to get the top deck stripped by the end of the weekend! Maybe even get some color and clear done by the end of next week. We will see how many people come to help and what they get done!

As much as I love doing this stuff, I know this might be one of my last. I took it easy today and had help but still hurt way more than the enjoyment I am getting out of this. It sucks to havve the ambition to do something but not the physical ability anymore. If this was any bigger than the whopping 13' I would have never taken this task on. Don't get me wrong, I am having a ton of fun doing it. Its just when I stop:(

I will post some pics tomorrow!
