Sam I am's new-used Checkmate...

Sam I am

Well-known member
The job issues are worked out and I'm staying put in ND/MN. This morning, I pulled the trigger on a 2006 2000BR with an 06 225 Pro XS. The boat only has 47 hours on the motor and hull. I'd been watching this one on boattrader.com for some time, made the call and they were ready to deal. It's not propped correctly as it's coming with a 21P Tempest and a 19P High Five. I've already got a 23P Tempest waiting and I'm going to try and trade the High Five for a 26P Tempest. I thought my Pulse 185BR was going to be the last boat I bought...:rof:From what I've read, Checkmates are kind of like old tractors...once you buy one, you're not going to stop anytime soon.

Shoot...this should have gone in Picture This. Moderators...please move?

What a great boat/motor combo! Did the previous owner say why they sold it?

It was on consignment with the local marina. THe sales manager said the previous owner was a gentlemen with a lot of dough who has bought 7 boats in the past 10 years. Buys em', drives them a while and then onto the next shiny new one that looks interesting. I have to say, that is a life style I could handle. He'd already bought the replacement for this and since winter was around the corner, decided to dump it. If anyone looked it up on boattrader I got it well, well below the advertised asking price. There are deals to be had and deals to be made fellas!!! I'm stoked as hell about this boat.

I'm finding that the same philosophy I had in motorcycles is holding true with boats: if your willing to accept about 10% less performance/options/amenities than the leading edge, you can capture a hell of a lot of value at a significantly lower price.

Nice boat! Congrats! You may want to try a Trophy Plus 26 on that rig!

I'm just scratching the surface on the entire boating knowledge base. (All I knew when I bought my first boat was I wanted a Checkmate because my neighbor had one when I was kid and made a promise to myself I would own a boat like that one day)

What will a trophy plus get me that a tempest plus won't? I'm probably the king of stupid questions.

A whole different feel and ride you might loose a tiny bit on the top end but once you go trophy you will love it.:D Jaccos marine 399.00 for one shinney new one and 10 bucks to ship it comes in days you will love it.

you dog ! congrats! i've left 3 emails &3 messages never got a return ! i guess i wasnt aggressive enough !

I got lucky. Now, I just have to get to WI and get it back to Fargo!

I really, really like the 08 2000BR w/ 250 Pro XS that Bob from Robert's MArine has for sale. But, I couldn't get around the color (blue...I love Red...but the checkers are acceptable) and I really didn't want to slap such a great guy (Bob) and member in the face with a low ball offer on a package that warrants a much higher price than he's been forced to drop it too. Bob, if you read this, I'm not trying to rub salt in a wound.

Anyway, I'm excited...even double-gay-little-banana excited::banana::banana:

I thought my Pulse 185BR was going to be the last boat I bought...
One sexy boat:bigthumb:! Yea, I thought my 21' enchanter I/O would be my last one. To be honest, with all the work and money I have into it, the right offer and its gone! I would love to have a BBC powered mate next.

Picking her up Friday! I should be able to put her in the water a couple times before ice up...better wear my long underwear or frostbite at WOT could be a possibility.

Wow....

I got the boat for a bit under the NADA low-average and the bank said it was worth even less! :eyecrazy: NOt a problem, but I had to up my down payment as the bank would not even consider 100% on a used boat...no that I was going to do that anyway...the boat market is tough, tough, tough right now. Maybe I didn't get the deal I first thought I did...oh well, I paid what it was worth to me so...screw it, I'm happy with the purchase. I'm going to look at it as my own little stimulous package for the economy.

The marina is going to make sure the trailer bearings are packed and I'm pushing them to keep the 19P High Five and give me 26P Trophy Plus or Tempest Plus. A 21P Tempest Plus also comes with the boat. A 19P prop on that motor seems absurd!

Anyway, i pick it up on Saturday and bring her home. The weather sucks, but i should be able to get her in the water at least a couple times before ice up.

Congrats. You are going to love that motor, and I concur you need more prop than a tempest 23. That is what I have on my 2400/225 PRoXS at it is the (almost) perfect prop for it.

I may try a 22 trophy pro one day though. If you end up with the high 5 that should not be hard to sell. I may be interested in it as a ski prop.

Congrats - It all depends on what you want to do with the boat.

For skiing and taking several people out you may have the ideal props that come with it. For running light for top end I am sure you can use a lot more pitch.

I don't know how heavy that boat is compared to mine. With the 23 Tempest the old Trimate is hard to beat from 0 - 55.

Let us know how it performs. I think that is the same engine I have and it is a torque monster. :D

She's home!

Went to Woodruff over the weekend and test drove the boat and brought her home. The lake I got to drive it on was VERY small and with that motor made for a quick ride, but I got it up to 73 indicated and with the 21P Tempest I swear I was prop walking out of the hole. The 225 Pro XS is INCREDIBLE when coming from a 175 EFI. I mean...like...holy $h!t!!!!!!!! Also, it's much quieter than my EFI was which will be a welcome change.

The boat itself was flawless. Not a scratch. I was absolutley stunned at how mint this boat was. It exceeded expectations. I'm not lying when I say this thing looked like it rolled out of the showroom. WOW.

The only disappointment was the props the dealer sent with the boat. They did not match up with the rest of the package. The props were clearly older used up props. The 19P Highfive is a piece of crap and the 21P Tempest Plus is usable...about a 6.5 out of 10. I got down and checked the skeg, and lower unit and there wasn't a mark anywhere. Not even a scratch. I asked him if those were the original props with the boat and he said, "Uhhhhhhm, I'm not sure, I'd have to check." I said, "No you don't." BUt...I let it go. That was probably a mistake, but....whatever.

Props aside, I'm very happy and excited. I was hoping to drop her in the lake sometime, but with the snow already flying I doubt that will happen.

New personal best speed in a boat will have to wait until next summer...bummer.
