1987 STARFIRE

That was my other thought Jim. I was thinking with these high fuel prices I could enjoy the savings a smaller motor would give me.

dave, the guy's overhere of the dutch fast boats forums are pushing me towards the big block into the senator.

no way.. it's fast enough for me, and i'm not interested in the big numbers on fuel.

for now i'm getting a 65 out of the checkmate. and that is enough. the lake i'm normally on is getting smaller and smaller otherwise. i don't see the thrill to get over 70 and twice the amount of fuel.

Like I told dave over the phone, a 305 can match the hp of a stock 350 pretty easily with a new cam, intake, carb like he mentioned. It will push that 18' boat as ast as he will want to go.

But then you are topped out, while you could spend the same amount of money that you just spend on go-fast goodies on getting a stock 350, then add the goodies later (if wanted) and you'll be crushing that modded 305.

Dont worry about the 305 not being enough motor. My old 21foot wellcraft had a bone stock merc 305 in it and it moved it just fine. Fuel consumption was impressive as well.

My last boat had a 198hp 305, had it in the family since 1983 so it survived the abuses my teenage years dished out with nothing more ever being needed than a set of exhaust manifolds after about 24 years. Pushed my 18 foot bowrider to 51 on the speedo in its prime and 47 to this day on the same speedo and when I GPS'ed it the speedo was dead on. That was in a tank with an inefficient hull so you should go significantly faster. Same motor in a brand new Stingray bowrider in 1988 with a more efficient hull used to spank my boat all day long, probably ran mid 50's or better. Oh, and my 305 is still going in that same boat to this day taking Dad out on fishing trips in the bay. Only other thing it ever needed was a carb rebuild but since I had a 600 Edelbrock on the shelf it got a $25 aluminum dual plane Weiand off CL instead.

There might not be much of this left by next weekend but you can stop by and see the starfire. I could probably use some advise while your here.

That shouldn't be a problem. Hopefully I can get the Enchanter tore apart quickly and have time to hang out.

Hi Rngr, Jimster here, are you able to use the trailer from this donor vessel for the Starfire? I'm thinking that the Starfire did not come with a trailer?
