2001 Evinrude 250 HP FFI Problems

About as bad as when I had my cover made and the boat came back with ash all over from him smoking in my boat. :pissed:

That would have put me over the edge!

The one time I had leave my boat with the local Merc tech to have a sensor replaced under warranty on my 300XS I took my motor hood with me because I was afraid it would get scratched!

I probably would've punched him in the face, if was I standing there.:pissed: The part I don't get is he use to restore boats himself, that's what really got me.

LOL!!!! My frustration factor with the Enforcer has reached a boiling point!! But if anyone would like to finish a project boat, make me an offer. Hell I'll let it go for $6000.00 just like it sits.

Why couldn't you have done this a year and a half ago ;)? It would have saved me a lot of work.

I'm still restoring mine. After having my motor guy check out the old Evinrude XP200 I decided to upgrade. After a lot of research I decided to get a Merc or post-2001 BRP (due to OMC Ficht problems and parts quality control issues). I picked up a 2003 225HO from an Evinrude dealer last week. My guy is going to rig it in a couple of weeks. Bought new controls, ignition switch, wiring harness, gauges, etc. Just put the 2nd coat of paint on the hull last week. First coat of paint looked terrible (brush marks), so I sanded most of it off. Second coat came out almost perfect (I used a foam brush this time). One more coat this weekend then I'll start painting the deck. Still need to put the cockpit together. Everything's cut to fit, I just need to glue it all together. Shooting for the end of June. I'll post before/after when done.

I could never sell mine after putting so much sweat into it.

LOL!!! I'm not planning on getting rid of the boat, just the frustration of the motor is what prompted me to come unglued. But if and when I do sell the enforcer my next boat will only be couple of years old. :thumb: I would like to enjoy the boat and not do a major resto on it. You're go love the E-Tec 225 HO, I was looking for a used one about the same year or newer.

I stopped by the shop Friday afternoon with the intention of pulling the mate back home. To my surprise he had the mate in the shop, hadn't checked the motor out yet but at least it's out of the weather.:) I should know what the problem is sometime tomorrow, hope it isn't bad.

Just got off the phone with the tech with one more test left to do it's leaning toward a bad computer (EMM).:( $1200.00 for the EMM or $1000.00 for a factory reman plus labor. So I'm looking at about $2000.00 to have the motor repaired.:eyecrazy:

That sucks. Sorry to hear that. Will you have it for the weekend?
No. He's got to send my computer to the factory so they can upload all the info from the old to the new one. My understanding, the computer is motor specific so the factory will get all the serial numbers from the injectors and other information from the bad EMM. Then program the new EMM for my motor.

CM

While it would be nice to have the boat for the holiday weekend the rest of the summer is still in front of us. Did the tech say how long the factory would take to turn around the EMM?

It will make it easier to sell this motor if you can get a full season of hassel free operation, should you decide to go that route.

Glad to hear they are narrowing down the possibilities.

Well that sucks on the $$$. Hopefully it fixes it and you will have trouble free performance from it. Atleast you will be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor when the mota is fixed.

Any thought of fixing it to sell, and then repowering it with Merc or E-tec?

I'll probably sell the rig and buy something newer.

Wow, it really hurts to read this situation progress from bad to worse. Especially considering all of the hard work you put in this winter.

You have a proven hull, I wouldn't think about selling the entire rig. Sell the motor/controls to someone with a fishbote and go get a 300XS. You can get one used and still under warranty from Wildman.

If you put 50 hours per season on your motor, the fuel savings alone will pay for the monthly payment on a 300XS considering the price of gas (based on a decent down payment and a 4 year loan). If anyone on this site doesn't believe me, ask around. The 300XS consumes nearly half of the fuel of my old 250EFI and less than half of my 280 and requires less maintenance.

Before you sell the "rig", do the math for yourself. :thumb:

I'm just talking out of frustration right now, but I'll probably keep the boat and possibly get another motor next year.

Hey CM....I feel for you, my brother in law has a 135 ficht and runs the best fuel, and I don,t think it has ever been opened full throttle. Always winterised by the best tech in Ontario (and he is ) last summer it would not start and $3500 later he had a new computer and that was with a lot of help from the dealer who had some pull. as we speak my Merc won,t run! so I am looking into some high-tech carbon fibre oars !!!!! good luck . Agreed with what HD said. Besides, unless you buy a brand new boat, your just like me and would not be happy and would end up working on it also. You have been real cursed with this boat from the getgo but you are near the end of the tunnel. Everything you have done is top notch and when the motor issue is taken care of, I am sure you will get lots of trouble free years of service from that sweet mate:cheers:

Well guys I got hit with two whammies today.:( The first one called into a meeting today at work, the company I work for is downsizing/eliminating positions. I was given my two week notice along with about 15-20 others, some that had been with the company between 30 and 40 yrs. This will be the first time in my professional career to be laid off. Twenty three years in the engineering business and I've never seen it this bad.
Second one, called the tech about the motor confirmed the computer is bad. He called the factory and was told a new computer is $1800.00 and a reman one is $1200.00. :shakehead:So I'm going to pick up the mate on friday and park her under the carport until I find another job.
