Did I get srewed?

So I had a 1978 Merc 175 on my 19ft check but wanted more speed. I took the old motor in and found that the leak down was between 20-40% so I traded the motor for what the local Merc dealer called a modified 200. The problem is I'm only seeing a couple more MPH than I was with my old "worn out" 175. I had a different dealer do a Dyno test on the new motor and he found a stock 200 put's out between 3800-4000 pounds at 5000 rpm where my motor is only putting out 2500. Sounds like I got hosed. I plan to call the dealer back and get a refund($4000) but I wanted to make sure I was right or am I missing something.
Thanks

any lube??

didn't pay much more than that for my starflite when i bought it, yet it needed some work.

Leak down tests are done for a 4-stroke. If a dealer does it the same way, it will come out at about 30%. Probably nothing was wrong with your motor.

Ok so the Merc dealer called and after looking the motor over they said it still had the "break in Jets" installed so they switched them out and gained 1100 on the wheel? The motor had just been rebuilt so does this make sense? What is the purpose for the "break in Jets"? Sounds like I might not have gotten taken after all but I will need to get it back on the water to see.
thanks:thumb:

I have never in my life heard of "Break-in Jets" but I guess someone may want to run it richer at break-in. Never heard of it though!

He said it dumps twice as much into the carb? I did notice that I went through a hell of a lot of gas in a short amount of time wide open. What does he mean by "picked up 1100 on the wheel?" Sorry but I didn't get a chance to talk to him at length before he closed.
thanks

Probably 1100 rpm

Just thought I would let you guys know that I didn't get screwed after all, with the right sized jets that motor is a monster. I bury the needle at 65 without any trim at 5600rpm. If I can get the chine walking under control I should be able to get into the seventies with a little trim. I might raise it up another hole and see what that does. My water pressure wide open is around 17 is that about right?
thanks:bounce:

experiment with the trim, Checkmates love lots of trim.....the hull lifts and you can feel it free up and really start to fly. That always brings a huge grin!!!
Do you have a jack plate? you will want one.
back in the early 90's Daren34 and I put a then new 140 evenrude on his 1980 Diplomat. had lots more power than the old 140, but would chine walk really bad. I put a CMC 6" hydraulic plate on it, and it was like a different boat. would only walk at wfo, plate all the way up and trimmed to the moon!!!6300 rpm with a 22p raker. that little boat shocked a lot of bigger boats!
