Enforcer Floor resto

I made some progress on the boat this past week, it's kind of hard to work it when I'm on the nightshift. Anyway i got the floor, foam and the knees removed. I removed four bags of foam from underneath the floor. My worse fear the transom, after removing the transom braces I found rot in the top. I would've never found this had I not removed the spashwell. So I'll be doing a transom replacement as well. Here's some pictures:

Things that you should'nt find in the bilge area; comb, hair clip, scrub brush, spark plugs, condom packages, leaves, wire, battery support.:shakehead:
Robbie,
Just be thankfull you did not find the condoms that were in the package's;)
The transom has got to break your heart. Atleast you have the know how to do this yourself. Also you know what you have when you are done with it all and should give you years of use.

LOL!!! I found a screwdriver as well. I would've never thought the transom was bad. The only way water could've gotten in is thru the snap screws. I'm glad I removed the splashwell or I might have lost a motor in the lake. Just think I almost had someone else do the work, but decided to do it myself. Yeah you're right at least I'll know how it's built once I'm done.

Today I'll remove the motor, gill bracket, swim platforms, tie down eyes ,trim tabs and hopefully start cutting the transom out. From the factory I got a beefed up transom to hold twins (special order). So I'll rebuild the transom at least 2" thick with beefed up knees and cross members.

Hanging my Johnson

Today I removed the mota, gil bracket, trim tabs, swim platform and tie down eyes. Using a engine hoist I was gonna let my johnson hang, but decided to build a support to hold my johnson for a few weeks.:D

I'm thinking hard about not adding the trim tabs back on since I watched water come out of the holes on the port side. I'm not sure why the trim tabs were installed, I haven't used them yet. Also not going back with twin swim platforms either, too many holes in the transom. Every single bolt I took out the transom was wet. Here are some pictures from today:

Time to get the gil "POWDERCOATED" Play it safe with a nice shinny black or maybe a white that matches the outboard. Just Ideals

I got some more work done this morning before going to my real job, most of the inner skin is off except for the corners and bottom. The transom is soaked and rotten, I'm surprised the motor hasn't fallen off yet. Here's some pictures:

Today I continue the tedious task of removing the transom. I got the cross member removed and the stringers cut back from the transom. Also cut the inner skin from the top as well. The plan is to have the transom completely removed by Friday afternoon. Here's some pictures:

Wow...this is why I re-bedded every piece of hardware on/in my transom and deck so hopefully I don't ever have to do this. But since you are into it now, you have a clean slate to do it right.

Looks good so far. Just think of the weight you are getting rid of.

Are you putting the tabs back? I have never really thought about needing them but I'm sure they help in the chop.

Keep it going and post more pics. :thumb:

Thanks!!! I'm guessing about 200 lbs of weight foam and wood if not more. That's not counting the splashwell that I removed. I've look at the new 24ftr O/B and none have the trim tabs on the back. So I'm going to leave those off. I'll go with a single swim platform as well. Thanks for sending pictures of your mate, a great go by even though you've got the spashwell.

I got lucky i guess, when i put the jp on in august and pulled everything out of the back it was so clean you could eat off of it, so i got the ball peen out and every where i tapped it bounced and almost hit me in the head. but i was half scared of what i would find.

I was pretty lucky with mine as well, only had to do a little glass work to rear floatation chambers and replace one of the I/O motor mount/stringers. The rest of the boat was great. It's funny how stinkers like us get lucky and good guys get the hard work.

Good luck with the rest of the build up and hope it only gets better from here.
Your doing a great job, I love the colors of you boat, glad your restoring it.

I got lucky on the last mate that I replaced the floor in. I guess it's a hit and miss thing when you buy a used boat. That's the way it goes though. I'm having fun tearing it apart, plus I'll know how it's built when I'm done.:D

Thanks!!! You gotta love the older Mates, the possibilites are endless on a resto.:thumb:

You're making great progress with the restoration. :bigthumb: I was hoping that you didn't have to mess with the transom but I'm glad you found what you did for the sake of safety. At least you didn't have to mess with the core. Talk about a kick in the gut!

You have a really nice looking boat and I was curious to know if the colors are orginal from the factory or if it has been custom painted?

Thanks !! I was hoping for the same thing, but as fate would have it's soaking wet. I had a gut feeling the transom was bad when I tore out the knee braces. I'll post more pictures later of what I took yesterday the transom is coming out in pieces. The factory put screws in to hold the beefed up transom together prior to glassing it in.:( It's a total PITA to remove!!!

The Enforcer came from the factory w/ a red bottom, white sides, black gunnells and the deck white w/ black and red stripes. The PO had the sides and back painted red. Mike @ Checkmate sent me a copy of the original order. The Enforcer was a special order for a guy here in Charleston in 1983.
