Even More CL Finds!

Believe the mx-15 in Saginaw is really a mx-14, owned a mx-15 and currently doing CPR on a mx-14, hmmmmmmm, no the wife would really kill me this time

"This is a 1970 Checkmate MX-15. 15ft outboard type speed boat (motor not included for asking price). Hull seems sound, has original fiberglass seats. Tires on the trailer are bald but hold air and it pulls fine down the road. Comes with bill of sale.

$225 for boat and trailer. Motor, controls, and guages would be extra. Motor is locked up."

Always skeptical when someone can't take decent digital pics of their junk and post them... 'Hull seems sound'???? Uh....

Not to mention wanting extra for a locked up motor.

What is a 1992 star liner worth?

I think he's got it priced fair. I'd Call Dean and confirm he got the interior from the factory, but I'm pretty sure he did given the pics. Looks pretty sharp. I ran across a 92 in Winnipeg a few years back and that guy was asking $13K canadian with was close to $15K US with the exchange rate what it was back then. A mint blue Starliner identical to mine in color scheme went for $10K a couple years back just down the road from me. There's a speed shop in town with a white and red one that's been on his lot for a couple years that he's holding on tight to at $9K. I paid $7k for mine...3 years ago and it wasn't in nearly as good a shape as this one appears to be. That boat at $12K is doing okay. Great color. There's a rootbeer flake one in town for $8750 I think...and the White and maroon one went for $5 or $6K. That was a good buy for someone.

I forwarded that Bassmate to my Dad. We have been looking for a small utility boat to put the dock in and out, do some fishing and pull my girls on tubes/skis (my dry exhaust isn't too good for that, lol). Might as well be a Checkmate

IIRC, that boat was post for sale a year or so ago? I wonder if it sold back then or it's the same one?

I'm about 10-12 miles from the BassMate if he wants someone to take a look at it.
That'd be worth a trip just to have a 'look-see'. You think that's a 115 on the back?

Would look good and period correct being towed behiind my green 1976 Jeep CJ5:

I remember when I was trying to identify my MX-14 I saw a few checkmates that looked identical, but were 15 ft long. I'll have to double check with Viper 1 but if I remember correctly, 1970 and 1971 MX-15's had smooth decks identical to the MX-14's, and in 1972 the hump in the back was added. So if this is 15ft long it would be a 1970 or 1971. I think the horsepower rating changed from 140 to 150 as well in 1972 but again I'll have to double check to be sure.

That was for sale before I bought my Convincor. Same pics. I really liked it then and still do but those pics are at least three years old.

I just checked with Viper 1. It was just 1970.

pretty sure my MX-15 was a 1971 and it had two humps on the sides (one on each side) that looked like air scoops from about the seats to the transom and never could figure out what they were for and it was rated for 150 horse from the factory.

I believe the first production 1500 inline was 1973. 1400 was 72.

I believe the first production 1500 inline was 1973. 1400 was 72.

And then some time in early 1980's the EPA changed the outboard horsepower ratings from the crank to the prop, and the inline 150 got de-rated to 140 horse.

Jim, ive done a lot of reading up on inlines since I bought my two 1350s. I read several times that the 150 inline was rebranded the 140 in the late 70s in order not to compete with sales of the new 150 V6 Black Max. Maybe Sammie can confirm this story.

If anyone is interested, there is a great thread on S&F by Jerry Hale. He was the engineer that developed the V6 outboard for Mercury. He talks about the whole project from the beginning, January 1970! . Starts on post #11.

That could be, but either way, the old 150's would have turned into a 140 after the EPA ratings change. I do know Mercury sold the 150 inline along side the V6 150 for a while. Very foggy old days memories. The V6 150 first year was I think 1976 or 1977? Johnson beat Mercury to the punch.
Howard Pipkorn changed the horsepower ratings of the smaller Hydrostreams he was producing from 150 down to 140 when the V6 outboards came out. The 18' Viking was the smallest model rated for the V6 power.
