I guess it was my turn for motor troubles

I'm glad I'm not paying for this, changed spark plugs, that didn't work, changed throttle position sensor, that didn't work, stuck a new ECM on and she runs like a top, weird because we weren't getting a fault code from it. I won't be able to do a water test until the weekend but it seemed good in the test tank, way more power than ever.

Ok, it ran good in the test tank, I decided to take it for a lake test before I took off for Indiana on Tuesday and it was doing the same thing, still had a bog at WOT- back to the dealer who I was starting to wonder about, I've been taking my stuff there since I was 16 and never seen something drag out like this.

Now after researching the problem for four days and changing all these parts they say it was a back knock sensor that wasn't adjusting the timing properly, to me that would also explain why sometimes it would do 70 easy and the next time struggle to get to 55 .

Of course this part is no longer available from merc so they had to bypass the sensor, now I have to run premium fuel, not a big deal because I usually do anyways but all they sell at my lake is regular so it would be nice to have the option of running regular if I had to, this is getting expensive pre-mixing gas plus the oil injection and now premium fuel.

They lake tested it this morning and said it was good but I won't believe it till I see for myself tomorrow

This better work, if not I'm parking it and spending the day on the pontoon boat, I've been so caught up doing stuff on the mate all winter that I kind of forgot about the pontoon, haven't even seen it since last fall, either way I'll go get it tomorrow and throw it in, the E-TEC will pull through, LOL but the mate definitely has more cool factor :D

Looks like your just going to have to be cool and run the mate all summer:thumb:

Thinking of hanging my 25hp yammy on the mate for this summer, atleast it runs, still scratching my head trying to figure out how I can pay for a new e-tec for it.

I spent most of the day cleaning the boat, it still as to look good even if it don't run;)

when is the motor cutting out? only high rpms or midrange around 4k? i have heard a lot of guys having problems with bad stators and the motor will cut out at around 3500-4000 rpms. my 2.4 starting to do this but i sold it and repowered with a newer 3.0l before i even started to figure out a fix for the problem

So after three weeks of screwing around at the dealer they assured me it was fixed, I went and tried it this morning and it still wasn't performing the way I thought it should, still just wasn't pulling hard, would only hit about 5400 rpm, I phoned the dealer and told him and he came right over.

he unhooked the detonation sensor that automatically adjusts timing and it seemed to run better, he tried that last week and it didn't seem to make a difference but since then they found a couple bad ground wires on the motor, we set it at max timing and went back out, it was like a different boat, ran great and the merc scream was back, it has more power than ever since I got it in the fall, got 72 gps with the 25 laser 2 and 68 with the 24 trophy plus, that was with a full tank of fuel spare props, skis in locker, anchor etc. I still have more props to try. I think 75 may me possible.

After that I went out to the lake with the family and the boat performed great all day, you'll all be happy to hear that my boss had his Baja out(the one I hauled back from Baton Rouge, LA for him) and I blew his doors off, I was taking it easy because we had the kids in the boat and he was passing us and my wife grabbed the kids and told me to hammer it, god I love her :D

Went through a whole tank of premium and it never missed a beat:banana:

now I have to run premium with the knock sensor un hooked but I usually do anyways.

Life is good. I also got quite a few laughs at the boat launch watching all the weekend warriors try and load/unload while I was waiting for a turn, I feel for you guy's that trailer your boats and have to deal with that all year.

I still think that I should be running a 26-28 raker or renegade but you know what motor I would need to do that ;)

You can run an omc prop on that black mota. Some machine work is required, or a cut down prop nut- but it can be done. Don't know why you'd want to.... everyone knows how slow that omc stuff is :D

Glad you got your motor issues worked out.:thumb:

The RakerII worked very well on my hull... I also had a tempest plus which I think would work good, but didn't get a chance to try it. I'll try spining it on the 21, but probably end up selling, or trading it (its a 29p).

I won't be doing any machine work to make it fit but I will be running one of those props next year :sssh: the RakerII worked good on my avenger also, even though it was a slow omc mota. I think I'll stick with a trophy plus for this year, it seems like the best all around prop with a good load on the boat.

Sweet! I'm glad to hear you got it running like it should. Maybe now you will get your mind off that fishin motor rerig!!! I also got the playmate back up and running, man it sounds sweet, I am going to have to try and get Nick and that superboat out on the water:devil:;)
