Jeff , after viewing your pics of the bottom ,and the strakes are you sure that is original with no mods added .? Just curious .................and the reason being is........ there is to much facial surface ( strakes) squared off from end to end with no scarf joint .

im not sure about mods...i was told by the boat repair shop when i had the stator replaced the boat had a race set up...he thought I had a XR motor too...

can you explain a little more what you mean by "facial area" and there being no scarf joints?.

Jeff , i aploogize and should have worded that differently and with that in mind the cut on the liffting strake where it drops looks a little crude to me just because it is so squared off and was this done by the factory or somebody just trying to make the boat faster and in your pics it looks like you can somewhat see ply in the stepped part of the lifting strake or is that just me .

I've been following this thread regularly and I would bet money on all that hook came from it sitting on the trailer during the recore. I am restoring an 87 Hydrostream Vegas XT, which is a mod V tunnel hull, that is sitting on a roller trailer and you could see the hook being put in the bottom from the rollers from the core being rotted. Fortunately with the hull design I was easily able to set the hull up on some blocking on the outer sponsons and lift it off the rollers. Once I did that the hull came right back out and the hook was gone and from there I started the recore.

Kalugs 22 , Hydotreams are one of my all time favorite boats to work on or should i say fun considering i have done three in the last two years which all had to have a total recore, transom , ect ,and hopefully another one this spring ,& yes at this point in time after talking wtih Jeff , i think he is well aware of the fact that this problem (hook) might have occured from the trailer itself , and is........ in the process of redoing the entire bottom ( blueprinting ) the hull making sure everything is straight along with a few other things .

geez man...since you have been following this thread why didnt you speak up before?...thats what this forum is for ...discussions...and yes most not all of the hook does appear to be self inflicted, again, if you have been following this thread you should have seen I already stated that...

Your post is more insulting than the "I told you so guy"... no one likes that dude....but hey, thanks for finally chiming in...:poke:

well it all looks like it still has the factory speckled paint on it?? so i dont know, but there is no ply showing anywhere, no cracks other that the bow. Gel Seems pretty solid....just some nasty hook...and we all know where that came from...
Lets talk more about what i should do there....If you could call when you have a moment.....:poke:

Jeff , i just left a voice mail with you and will call back, and its all good , and do you remember what i told you a-while back ....... #1st it is just a dumb piece of fiberglass and you are smarter then it , and always will be .# 2 actually should be first and do you remember what i told you about something going to s**t how it can always be fixed no matter what......... because that is the beauty of it all . Jeff , it will be fine ,and at this point in time this is nothing compared to what you have already done or achievied during this project .

OG it's my first hydrostream redo, fortunately I don't have any transom issues just a small soft spot in the floor that turned into a recore. I don't think they are built as well as the mates based on some of the material comparisons between the two. The core got rotted by really what was a design flaw by using matting that was very corsely woven and left open holes at the top of the core, once the floor started letting water in then it was all down hill from there. I purchased it knowing I was going to be doing a floor and some other work.
They are quite a ride though my dad had a 2007 Voyager XT last summer with a 250XS I pushed it close to 90 with a few passengers.

Here's a pic 2011-05-29_20-25-43_859.jpg

I don't know why I didn't post earlier haha and I think I do remember you stating that but I was probably reading it on my phone then didn't get to post and then it was already past but then with all the hook talk i figured better late then never haha but nice work so far on boat, I'm sure it'll turn out better than when it was new. It's great your blueprinting the bottom, unfortunate for the reason. I got lucky on mine, I just happen to be standing back from it and since it's white on the black trailer it was real easy to see what was going on. Honestly if it wasn't for just noticing it I would probably be in the same situation. Those damn roller trailers! I know another guy that has one with an older baja on it, he busted his hull and fixed it on the trailer and it has a nasty hook in it, but he's slow and probably doesn't really care...

No worries, I should have known better. However, again with OG, Robbie and a few others here, ive gotten this far. at this point just a little more material, had always wanted to flip this pig and fix/paint her...with the blueprint I should gain some speed, which is what started this resto in the first place....:D I like the roller trailer, unfortunate the arent good for performance boats...so add bunks to the list ....:brickwall:

I not frustrated my friend, discouraged yes, but not frustrated, be careful before you speak....
He actually states he knew it was going to happen and second, hind sight is important, but hind sight is not what this was.

This is a forum open for discussion, comments and to lend a helping hand, so please tell me my shoes untied, dont let me fall and then tell me you knew it would happen...On the other hand, Its not his fault I fell...:irked:

And if that comment would make someone not post things...i think we all better go home... hes a big boy, let him speak up if he didnt like my comment as much as I didnt like his....and, yes, if the post is I told you so, then i dont want you to post anything...:bigthumb:

I don't care about your post, it's your thread do what you want, trust me it won't stop me from chiming in, and it was in no way supposed to be an "i told you so", I was just sharing of a similar problem that I had with a roller trailer during a recore I just happen to be standing in the right place at the right time. I have been following your thread but not from the beginning you were already recored before I started reading, I wouldn't have intentionally not shared something like that. We are all here to help and be helped! Either way I like the boat, it should last you a long time with the quality of work your putting into it.

perfect...:D

Jeff are you having to build up the low spots with some type of putty or mat and resin? I'm trying catch up on the work you're doing so far on the bottom.:o

does anyone else have "steps" in their strakes like this??

Blueprinting started today...completed the sanding, ready for base fill of resin/cabosil. Then will get a thin feathering coat of p-77....i will cover the complete repair with cloth and resin...

the hook on the starboard side does appear to be from not supporting the hull properly when removing and restoring the balsa core. However i didnt do any significant core work on the port side and it has a small hook as well. So other than a little extra material, this had to be corrected anyway...disappointing i didnt think to support the hull better, but at this point in the build, no big deal....

Top secrete:
Robbie, look at the chamfer on the strakes...this will be built up to a razor sharp right angle, giving less drag = more speed...
