To Eco-Boost, or not to Eco-Boost!?

That is the question! I am looking to get rid of my current truck, 2008 Silverado extended cab, and get into a new(er) F150. I am not sure if I am sold on the Eco-Boost V6 they have for them, but a gentleman I work with swears by it. Any input from you gents would be greatly appreciated, since I assume most of us tow our toys around.

Thanks!

I work with three guys who just bought Fords. 2 new used and 1 brand new. They all went with the 5.0 based on the recommendation of the sales guys which was based on how they each said they were going to use their truck. The critical factor is how much will you tow? The guidance they received was that if you tow a lot: Eco Boost. If you don't tow much: 5.0. All three different sales guys said the 5.0 will get better mileage on average if you're not towing. Towing, the eco boost walks all over the 5.0 in every regard.

This is all second hand information. I own a diesel.

I work at the Ford campus here in Dearborn. I drive these trucks everyday and can tell you they are fantastic engines. They outperform a V8 slightly in every category except towing torque. Here it smokes a v8 getting being nearly 2 seconds faster in 0-60. It haw much better torque.

Really it is just a V6 with a turbo.

Good stuff.

We have a couple at work. They flat out fly compared to Fords lousy N/A v8's. Im a chevy guy and am impressed. getting 17-18 mph on the job (back roads-stop & go driving) and have seen 21-22 on the highway. Havent towed with them though but know ones who claim no comparisson. Longevity is yet to be determined. I know all the eco-boost systems are having a few wiring/performance issues on rainy days. Ours are no exception to that including my 6.4 powerstroke.

If this is any indication, most of our fleet drivers buy chevy for personal use including myself.

I bought a new 2013 supercab 5.0 4x4 tow package 3.55 gear.. I love it, tows the boat like It ant there, it can handle much much more. The tow mode is great also....I hear ppl saying the the 5.0 wont tow, but just few years ago everyone was towing with early 5.0's, 4.6, chevy 4.8 & 5.3's with less power and didnt have any problem....im not against the eco, just not for me..

Does anyone know if climate adversely affects the Eco-BOost? And by that, at -30 is impact of the turbo reduced? Or is it better because the air is colder? I've heard both, but I gotta think the colder temps would enhance performance not reduce it...

My son just got a brand new Eco-Boost.

The thing is a rocket compared to my 2006 F150 V8. He is getting a little better mileage than mine, especially on the hi-way. I was a also concerned about a V6, but Apple Ford where we purchased it, gives a life time power train warranty. So he decided to go for it. So far it's been great.

One word, HEMI!
My good buddy bought an Eco and has owned it a year or so and is disappointed in the gas mileage . Not what he was expecting and is going to trade it in and go back to an f250 even though he does not tow anything. He paid close to 50k for the truck and I think that is nuts. I know my new Hemi is getting near 20 mpg the highway and has alot of power for towing. Just my .02

If he paid 50k he paid to much. My son's truck sticker price was $44,000, is loaded (no Leather), and after incentives and dickering we were down to $33,000. And this did not include his trade-in!

He bought his shortly after they came out. I think they are nice trucks and 33k sounds much better. I know they are quick and if they made a 2 wheel shorty I would consider one for a street toy. Fast and low.

If I can stay away from stop lights, open road, I have seen 23mpg. Driving to work and back with stop lights, I can average 18 if and when I can keep my foot out from under the hood! I had an 18ft trailer behind it with 7000lb of hay and it pulled it not just good, but great! Don't get me wrong, I like Ford trucks and the fact that they have the strongest body of any of the big3, but the combined power/towing ability, and mpg's of the new Hemi with fuel management system is very hard to beat!

That would be cool. You might be able to order a Shorty!

2 of my buddys bought new Eco's this year, they have had no issues and love them.
I love the interiors in the Lariat packages and above. I seriously considered one last month, but decided V-8 sound was for me, so I went back to GM, and got a Sierra with the 6.2 :)

Ford has a reg cab 2wd sport version for 2014 called the "Tremor"...

Another example of us Canadians getting screwed, lol, my dads sticker price was 58k and he paid 46k, his is as loaded as they come, even the perelli tires.

This is his second ecoboost and he loves them, I am quite fond of them myself my banker just doesn't think they are right for me, lol.

His first one had zero problems but he only had it two years, I never noticed any performance difference in cold weather Sam, pulls like a freight train at any temp.

I know that the gas mileage got better after about 30k miles on his first one, seemed like that anyway.

I sat in one while building the Ford display for last years Detroit Auto Show but I know they are coming later this year not sure if available quite yet. Have any of you seen the Ford Super Chief. Now that is a truck.

I disagree with the "boost=shortened engine life" theory. My last turbo car had 160K miles on it when a balance shaft bearing let go which was totally unrelated to the fact it was turboed. When the engine was built with the turbo in mine nd it should last a long time. Giving it a minute or two of idling before shutting it off and staying on top of your oil changes is crucial.

The Ram diesel 1500 should be out in a few months, maybe you should look at that also.

I always bought GM trucks for years and then I switched to a Ram Hemi a year or so ago and it's the best truck I've owned so far. The 5.7L gets better gas mileage versus any of my GM trucks I had, the interior is one of the nicest around and the Hemi pulls like a freight train and has a sweet sound when you get into the throttle. Also, it rides like a frickin' Mercedes sedan.

I would take one for a test drive if you haven't.

I myself might look at the diesel 1500 models when they come out and see if trading and getting one of those makes sense.
