What do you pull your checkmate with??

1986 Ford Bronco 302 5.0 L EFI. My dad bought it from Georgia with no rust. I drive it to high school everyday except in the winter when there's salt on the road. Otherwise it'd be a rust bucket by now. We're actually going to drop a 460 7.5 L into it this summer.

Thats one clean Bronco. Take from me do a little bit of work to your 302. You will be a lot happier than the 460.

Or shoot the middle and get a 351W to go in there. That way you don't have to swap the transmission, too. I'm pretty happy with the 351 in my F-250, and having driven a friend's similar year F-250 with a 460, I don't drink as much gas. (I get around 12-14 with a C6 and 4wd, my friends is 2wd and a 4 speed manual and gets around 8.)

What kind of work? My dad's had a bunch of broncos and he wants more power when we're pulling not only the checkmate but our sailboat and ski boat. He's never had a 302 before. Always been a 351 or 400. I guess the big difference between the 302 and the 460 is the fact that the 302 needs a lot more rpm than the 460 would for equivalent power. I figure that the mpg can't get too much worse if your not putting out as much rpm. I'm at about 8 mpg right now.

My previous truck was a 78 F-150 with a fairly built 400 (headers, cam, 4bbl carb, cam timing unretarded.) I had that truck for 15 years. Like I say, I am pretty happy with the 351W. If you already have the 460 and transmission, and don't mind refilling that sucker every time you leave the house, then go for it. You might want to see what kind of gears are in the rear end. If they are 3.5 (or lower numerically) then might have better luck changing the gears rather than the engine. The other thing you may need to worry about is the rear end. I exploded 2 9" rear ends (broke the axle tube on one, broke both main bearing caps off the other) with my 400 in my F-150, I can only imagine what a 460 will do to one. If you have a 8.8, that's even worse.

I had a 79 f150 that I put a 460 in and hated it. My friend with his 351 m with a tow cam and 4 barrel intake with a 600 Holley in his 79 bronco would walk all over it with slightly better gas mileage. I went back to a 351w which is like your 302 with a slightly larger degree veered and larger cubic in. I put a tow cam and performer intake with a 600 holley on it with headers and loved it. Right before I sold it I had bought a holley system max 2 barrel fuel injection set up used for 2 or 300 bucks. After that it was awesome. I got about 12 around town and maybe 14 to 15 mpg on highway with 4.10 gears 33in tires and a 4 speed with granny gear. For 500 bucks if you were a smart shopper you could buy the stuff used like a performer intake a new tow cam and either a fuel injection set up or maybe find a set of gt40 heads used.

I love the truck, but it will need a tune, exhaust and air intake to wake it up a little bit for my liking.

Do all these "mods" you guys put on your brand - new trucks, void the warranty?

The tune is the only thing I'm worried about when it comes to warranty. I'm going to try the exhaust and intake first. These new trucks feel like they are detuned pretty bad. My 2008 sierra was really woken up after the black bear tune. It also had an exhaust and air intake.

The newer Chevy engines (Post 2007) are pretty much at their peak power in the upper rpm's as far as what is just available with tuning only changes. However, there are big gains to be had down low mostly by lessening or removing the very conservative torque management. That right there gives huge gains on 0-60 times and in just plain ole seat of the pants feelings. The other gain that can be head is with the transmission. Lessening shift times, increasing shift pressures, increasing rpm range, changing shift points, ect. All of those can keep the max amount of power available working in an efficient range and where it can do the most work. By doing this you can create a situation where the engine doesn't drop out of it's powerband after a shift.

Gimme fuel, I think that's the first 2500 Avy I've ever seen. Didn't know they made them to tell you the truth. Cool truck.

Yes they did make them from 02-06. The 2500 Suburban had a longer run but is basically the same truck. Awesome heavy truck that rides like a caddy. Only engine available in them was 8100 with 4L85E transmission although it was severely de-tuned compared to the version in the HD's because it did not use the Allison trans. Luckily that was just computer inhibited. It is no longer that way...hehe.

Im not much of a ford man but they really have come a long way with the eco motor and the 5.0. Beautiful truck. Brian did you get a 6.0 in this truck? That thing has some big wheels for being stock. Is it me or are they larger than 20's

It has a small lift/level on it. 2.5" in the front and also brought the rear up an additional inch. Tossing the idea of a 5" lift. The wheels are 24's and the tires measure just over 33" tall. I wish I could afford the 6.2, but it was too much money. Mine has the 5.3 which they added 40 more hp in 2014.

Brian congrats on the new truck. I think it looks good with the height that it is. Did you have to get an alignment done after you did the little lift.

Thanks, and yes an alignment is a must after you alter any ride height in the front. I'll let you take it for ride at the bash.
