What do you pull your checkmate with??

Do all these "mods" you guys put on your brand - new trucks, void the warranty?
Yes.
But I guess that also depends on how well you know the dealer. They can do a lot if they really want to.
I was denied a warranty claim for a rear end because of my oversize tires and lift.
I "assumed" it would be covered and brought it in for some metal pieces I found during a differential oil change but it turned out to be just some filings left over from the factory. Cost me $1200.
I've been asked if I have a KN filter and that may void the warraty if oil is on the mass air flow sensor.
Whether they can legally do it or not, it can be a hassle and not worth going to court.

It's up to the dealer to prove that part/modification caused the failure but do you really want to spend money on a lawyer and go to court?

Yup it all depends on the dealer and the mod we are talking about. From my experience they have loosened up a bit now that they offer many of these mods installed that are not of their own equipment. GM has been installing 6" lifts and big wheels for several years now and that all is covered under warranty. Engine /trans mods are also available and covered . You can bet though, they will bring it up and see if they can roll you on it and try to get you to pay if they have proof of damage from any mods. I had 24" wheels on my Silverado with play in the column at about 60k miles and they repaired it with no questions asked. But Chevy Trucks Rock!!!!

Any accesory that isn't dealer installed voids the warranty on the system of the vehicle that it's related to. Oversized wheels voids warranty on steering, suspension, brakes and driveline components. Some dealers stick by the rules others don't unless the customer has an attitude problem. When I was a service writer I never declined warranty coverage for aftermarket parts installed on a truck yet I had coworkers that would. Usually when something that had some work done to it rolled into the shop I handled that customer. On the rare case that a vehicle had a concern that required a G.M. field tech to come out or when a extended warranty was sending a adjuster to inpect I had the customer bring us the factory equiptment to reinstall before they saw it.
John it's not up to the dealer to prove that part caused the issue with the vehicle, it's up to them to enforce the rules of warranty set by the manufacturer. It's up to the customer if they're declined repairs to prove it didn't cause it.

"However, if the reason for a parts failure is unclear, a dealer will usually charge you to diagnose the vehicle. If the aftermarket part was not properly installed or a modification led to a component failure, it is within the dealer's right to void the warranty for that part, and you will have to pay for the repairs out of pocket. If the aftermarket parts had nothing to do with the repairs in question, you will be refunded the fee for the diagnosis."

^^^This.

Yes but if it goes to court the burden of proof is on the dealer:

The saving grace for consumers is the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975. The act states that a dealer must prove that aftermarket equipment caused the need for repairs before it can deny warranty coverage.

If they try to say your lift kit caused your crank seal to leak they have to prove it. Good customers get taken care of, warranty only customers get "taken care of" too. ;)

It comes down to how far each side is willing to take the fight.

John

I find a good working relationship with the dealer is the best answer!! I have never been questioned on any of my warranty work but i take good care of my dealers! I deal with the same Chevy dealer for all things Chevy and the same ford dealer for all things ford! And i have drank more than a few beers with the service manager at both!

True but from how we operated we had no issues. Would never blame a leaking crank seal on a lift kit. Worn steering and suspension parts, worn drive line parts due to improper pinion angle maybe. I never had issues though as I was into the custom truck/car scene I didn't discriminate against those that did custom work.
Here's a couple of my old trucks.

Ignore the 30 day tag and dent in lt rr. this was a couple year after I sold it and a friend spotted it on the other side of town.

'98 Ford 4 WD short step side F150. I feel bad paying the insurance on it because the only thing I use it for is towing the boat.

Same thing with my truck except it gets used to pull the sleds or quads and makes an occasional trip to the dump. It's always nice to have a spare vehicle around though. When my commuter car broke I was using the truck to get to the carpool.

Fiancés 2014 jeep grand cherokee 5.7 hemi with 8 speed trans. It runs like a scalded dog! Her last jeep had a v6 with the 8 speed and it towed better then my truck. I can't wait to hook up with this hemi. Oh ya it has air ride suspension. Lifted pic then lowered pic.
