71 mx-15 restoration and build

Sounds like a good idea to this guy. I'm having a lot of fun. I'm starting to think I'm going to be board when I'm done with it. Or just use that time to go boating. :)

It is probably just the winter getting to me:o I doubt I will have time to get into something like that in the next couple years. We are getting ready to do a four phase remodel/addition project on our home (presently in the planning process). That will likely consume all of my free time for awhile:irked:

I painted the seat boxes, the inside and bottom of the front seats. I also was playing around with my carpet and carpeted the front seat boxes and the face side of the back seat bace. Also mounted in going to take them out to Finnish but wanted to see how it would look :). Probably getting ahead of my self but couldn't help it. Got the aluminum trim that goes from wood to carpet cut and fitted. Mocked up a pice of carpet. Once again couldn't help my self.

I posted this on the paint part of overhauling forum but I thought I would post it on here also just to keep everything up to speed. I'm planing on painting the boat and would like to go with the original purple or match it the best I can. One of my good friends witch is a auto body teacher at a teck high school. He knows alot but not much about painting a boat. He told me that he knows PPG makes a bottom boat paint. I was thinking about painting the hole bottom in this. Then just matching up the purple metal flack from House of Coolers to spray on the deck. What do you think of the bottom all black and the deck just purple. Also the product choice or what do you recommend I use. I used epoxy for my layup also I think that would matter on paint but then again I don't know.

I used interlux VC Performance Epoxy on the bottom of my boat . It turned out great and holds up to sanding very well . It is a semi gloss but when hit with a wheel shined up really nice . But I think you can only get it in White .

It looks like your boat has never been painted. How about gel coat? It's more work, but will hold up better than any paint.

This may help clear things up http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f55/will-gelcoat-adhere-to-epoxy-5794.html

I'm not speaking from experience, but I will consider this direction if get around to rebuilding my 72 MX-16. It's a lot of sanding and buffing but the result is a tough finish that can stay in the water. My boat will sit on a trailer most of the time and had been painted several times so I chose Algrip. I would use this again on the hull but I would use a base/clear finish that could be sanded on the deck. No matter what you choose, I'm sure the right people can match color for you, except those designated "bottom paints". It's looking good, keep the pictures coming.

Ok cool thanks ill look in to it. My bottom has been painted with some kind of thick black paint if I striped it could I still use jel cote.

Everything I've read says that after gel coat gets painted you can't re-gel. It might be possible if you're able to remove all the paint but the consensus on the web, and the boat repair book I have, is against it. Take a look at Adambombs link. http://checkmate-boats.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22355&page=6 He used some gel coat and can probably give you some insight. Paul seems to have a lot of experience with boat refinishing. If he doesn't chime in give him a PM and pick his brain. Good luck.

Iv been slacking on uploading pictures sorry guys. I got my splash well finished up 2 cotes of fiberglass and a lot of cabosil to get it smooth. May need some more filler be for paint but it's close . Might of been easer to just glass the top to the transom. O well to late now lol. Got the bulkhead finished up with using cabosil on the back side. I also rigged up some pulleys on the sealing to lift up the top. I got smart and used the hand crank on the trailer to hooked to a rope to pull the front up. Would of been really slick if I got it to pick it all up at once but didn't have enough pulleys. Mocked up the battery box as well got to make some brackets up to holed it in. Think that brings you up to speed.
