89 Starliner Factory Refirb

I don't think they will go out of business. They are owner by Global Marine which also owns Hustler. It was looking bad for them until Joe from Global bought them though. Hopefully the economy turns and they get busy again. Good guys and gals up there at the factory.

Agreed. I think they're "Well Heeled" form an ownership standpoint. Dean Reynolds has been fabulous. The restore has taken longer than anticipated, but I believe the product will be well worth the wait. In fact, I just got off the phone with Dean and everything is set for pickup on the 21st. He could have made the 14th, but my schedule precluded me from getting there. So...I'm pumped. The only part they are waiting for is the jackplate...apparently Atlas is back ordered. Dean also said the only part they reused from the boat besides the hull is the fuel cell. Otherwise, it's a new boat. This will be great, Dean said he'll have time to shake it down in the water before pickup now so there should be no problems over the 4th of July holiday. Can't wait...

Minor setback

So...mounting and rigging a G2 is not like mounting and rigging a Merc. After talking with Dubbert's Professional in Port Clinton the motor needs to be unlocked with BRP software otherwise it's a boat anchor. So, the boat and motor have to go up to Port Clinton and Jimmy Dubbert is going to rig it and set it up. When I explained what was going on with the boat & motor arrangement, he said that was critical info as there have been some service bulletins put out by BRP and he'll be happy to complete all those too. So, Jimmy's service appears to be pretty good. Dean knows Jimmy too, so they have a good dialogue going. Getting closer...the last 10% is always the toughest in any project. Still tracking for pick up next week. Keep your fingers crossed.

:( The bad news is the boat won't be ready next week. The good news it it's not anyone's fault.

As it turns out, the motor needs about 15 hours of work done to correct 8 different Recalls and Service bulletins for the G2's. Which, I'm glad are being done, but due to the quantity of stuff that needs to happen it's just not going to get done until next Friday.

I also learned something about my motor. Jimmy was convinced that I was incorrect in that my motor did not have power steering, but it turns out it I was correct. Infact, when they ran the serial number to bring up the spec sheet, Jimmy said this was one of the first if not the first G2 off the production line for retail sale. I was concerned about that, but Jimmy said that one all the service bulletins are done and recalls performed, it will be as good as the latest and greatest.

So, I'm delaying my trip one week...I should have it for the 4th. fingers crossed.

Does that mean you'll need hydraulic steering like sea star or do you add the power steering from the factory? I assume that all the G2's came with power steering. I thought (probably wrong) that the G2's had just the electronic cables for steering and gauges.

Hydraulic like Sea Star...I can't remember exactly what I ordered. But I don't think I went with Sea Star. Apparently, they're all power steering now with a pump internal to the motor. Some of the Verados are power, but they're run off an external pump.

Boat is at Jimmy's now...just got off the phone with him and he seems like a solid dude. He's rigged a lot of G2's which is great. Also buying two props: RX4 21P and 26P. Power and speed...

Good choice on the prop. They are similar to the Merc Rev4. Etecs have so much low end grunt you need the 4 big blades to prevent blow out. I tried a Raker and it blew out every corner. I used a 25p Rev4 on my 250 Etec. I would think the 26p will be great since your G2 will have more jam yet again. The 21P seems small to me. It will spin to the moon. Is that what someone is recommending? I would think 23p minimum... i don't know for sure, but your Mate is going to leap out of the water with that motor.

Mark,
I'm going with the 21P for towing the tubes and what not. I'm never going faster than 25-30 when doing that. I wasn't worried about the topline revs as much as I want the boat to remain firmly on plain while working the throttle at the lower speeds. I use a 19P High Five on my Ranger with the 250 Pro XS. The ranger is probably double (at least) the weight of the Checkmate so I think the 21P will scratch my water toy itch.

I can't wait much longer for this boat before anticipation turns to frustration. It's absolutely gorgeous. The G2's are monster torque producers so I think I'll be sniffing upper 70's with the 26. I would love to break 80.

Sam

I don't think it's going to be done by the 4th...waiting on Evinrude parts and props. Shoot.

I feel your pain man.... I really do. I keep trying to tell myself that it'll all be worth it in the end, but that doesn't make you feel any better when you are on the lake without your own boat. At least yours will be all shiny and new when she's done!!!
