89 Starliner Factory Refirb

Killer!

My buddy Miami Dave, has a buddy w/a huge E-tec dealer in Miami that is privy to the inside poop on those motors and he says they're still blown away by them.

Keeps calling w/updates on comparable repowers they've done and they're all drastic improvements.
I think your goal of a WFO, light load/big wheel speed of 80 is well within reach.

I think w/a 21" ski prop you'll have a drag boat from an idle!

you have to be itching to see this thing rigged and ready to go! the pictures look great, hopefully your itch is soon to be scratched and the wait is well worth the reward!

Update

Well...This is getting tough to take. Jimmy's got the motor rigged, everything hooked up, and recalls/service bulletins completed. BUT, the motor won't turn over nor will the gauges power up. Nothing is doing what what it's supposed to. So, Evinrude is sending a tech out to diagnose and fix. They should get there next week to figure it out. :(

So...not sure what to think. This isn't Checkmate's fault, but it would have been nice to be fighting these issues months ago instead of half way through summer.

I figured I'd already have the boat, so I scheduled vacations and filled my work calendar months ago...now I won't get there until end of July to pick up. School starts for the kids on the 23 of August...so three weeks to use the new boat before I pack it up and store it. :irked: Assuming they can get it to run.

It is what it is.

Wow, that kind of puts a damper on the excitement. Sorry for all of your troubles with this. With what we've seen though, it will all be worth it once you (finally) get the boat back. Hopefully we'll have a long fall and you can get some nice fall runs with it.

Sam, I feel bad for you. I know how excited you were starting this restoration and how long you've waited. Hopefully the problem is an easy fix..maybe just a reflash of the ECM software. The rest of your Checkmate brothers are rooting for you to get your boat back!! Hang in there!

That's sucks been dying to see how this thing looks all finished. Try to take solace in that fact that what your waiting for isn't something for just this summer. What you are doing is something you'll be able to enjoy for a bunch of summers.

I've done enough projects that size to know how easy and probable it is that you'll hit hurdles and that many of the hurdles cause a chain reaction of delays.
Can be very, very frustrating.

At least when I'm doing, I'm in control and see the issues.

Depending on someone else and waiting on them though......, makes it way more challenging.

I feel your pain Sam and wish the best for you.

Gary

Thanks everyone. My main business is precast construction and it doesn't matter how big or small the project is, a small cold storage building to the Vikes stadium, the last 5% is always the toughest and most painful. So, I"m not surprised this is happening. But, it would have been a lot of fun to blow the doors off my neighbor this weekend. He's go a 2100BR identical to the boat in the banner. He went by last night while we were having a camp fire and gave me a little throttle burp to taunt me...<sigh>.

It's still going to be awesome!

I'm pretty sure I saw your Liner when I dropped my MX15 off there in March. Maybe you saw mine when you picked yours up? I have a thread going on mine now too.

Yours turned out amazing. With the sad news on Kenny, I settled on clear coat to bring the finish back.

I haven't seen yours, but only because I haven't picked it up yet.

I got my signals crossed. I thought it read like you moved it to get the motor set up, but the photos looked like CM!

Dave, you got it right. It was moved to Port Clinton to get rigged, but will be going back to the factory for finish up work, buff any scratches from dubberts out and then ge it set on the new CHawk trailer.

Right now I'm trying to figure out if I should just have it hauled up or make the trip. Leaning towards making the trip even though I don't have 3 days to spare.

Super strange! Never heard of a new motor not turning over, let alone an Etec that will start in a nanosecond after touching the key. You are so right that you do not want to be waiting for a tech in July. Bummer. Real boaters always keep a backup at the dock. Take a deep breath and go fishing in the Ranger.

I know what you mean. I took three days to make the round trip from central PA, with a V-6 truck with 180,000 miles on it. Man, did it struggle!

It ain't done, but IT"S ALIVE!!!!

Ready for pick up and back to the factory to finish up the last bit of detail work: reinstall swim platforms, decals, and some other stuff. I'm glad I went with only a 4" jack plate as the there is quite a bit built into the motor. That motor looks huge though...huge. I had to play with the image since they took it ha;f in and half out of a shadow making it really difficult to see the motor without editing the image quality. Still on the old trailer...But I do love the stance of the boat on the old trailer. Hopefully the new one looks as good.
