89 Starliner Factory Refirb

Tell that to the nail sticking out of the dock, that happens to be exactly where he is docking.

True but a runner with a little sand on it used to hold the boat away from that nail by a passerby will be way less destructive to gel rather than paint.

I'm guessing the only place that boat will be parked is on Sams lift so no need to worry about hitting something on the dock. :bigthumb:

I can't wait to see the finished product, gonna be sweet.

True Dat! Covered lift, no less. Power winch, to boot. I have a swallow that like to nest in there though. I may need to put a fake owl in there. I'm also getting a custom mooring cover that will keep the dust out.

HOwever, I'm also giving serious consideration to cutting a hole in my living room wall and keeping it there.

Wow..sad to hear. Truely and end to an era and long time employee. RIP. Most Checkmate owners have no clue who sprayed their boats but his memory will live on in all the Checkmates we own!:thumb:

I may have sprayed that one originally, without flake, it would have been a great boat for me not to mess up. Kenny worked at Plant 2 back then on the big boats. Night shift was teaching me how to gel coat, probably mainly to get out of painting it themselves.

A crew had a goal of taping and spraying at least three boats a night. And the standard two color job of blue bottom and sides with white trim, seriously took like 15 minutes to tape and paper. For each part, so, 30 minutes or so total. If I had three orders with standard gel jobs, I would end up with lots of time to learn other things.

Deluxe gel jobs took longer, since there were added steps involved. But I did have the deluxe tape off on a Starflite deck down to maybe 40 minutes. Doing usually two of those a day, I could knock them out pretty quick.

Kenny moved into spraying gel, mostly because other gel coaters would end up messing up the job. He pushed for near perfection, where to others it was just a job. He certainly pushed me to be better.

Anyway, tell Kip to send more pictures, we need to get this thread back on track.

Update

Just got off the phone with Dean and they are getting back on track after losing Kenny. Sounds like it was pretty glum around there as they adjust to the new normal.

Anyway, Dean and I went over the final interior layout for colors and he updated me on the progress. The sides and bottom are pretty much sanded out and will be ready for buffing. After that, they'll flip her and repeat for the interior and then rig all the new gear and install the interior. This thing is a brand new 89. I'm assured there will be more pics coming. You'll see them when I get them.

It's got to be hard for that team to lose a long time player like Kenny.
Good to hear still moving forward on you're boat it definitely will be a new '89
I'm on holidays till the 20th and Ronny says my '79 Exicter will be ready to pick up very excited.

Update!!!

Sounds like everything is tracking for pick up on schedule. The bottom hull is all buffed out and they're finishing up the cap and interior as I type...no pics of the top cap or bottom yet, but here are some of the sides and the new interior... Banana Guy fo' sho'.

Man that boat will be a beauty!!! It's going to be tough to keep your eyes off the rear view mirrors and on the road pulling it home.
