Building twin outboards for my Convincor

They make pullers that you might be able to rent out your way with being in a big boating area. But looking at that shaft i would vote for some blaster for a few days before you try to hard. if you cant find a prop puller you might be able to hook it with a 3 jaw puller and pull it off without any damage! That shaft looks pretty rusty tho...

Thanks guys. Concerning the map gas: Would I heat the shaft or the prop? Seems to me like I'd heat the prop a little bit trying to get it to expand and then pull it off. Or would you heat the shaft trying to get a little bit of movement between that and the prop?

The prop but now that I think about it its probably got a rubber hub pressed in so I don't know how much good that will do.

Question for the Checkmate Team

If I'm going to try and run this on a hose or a tub of water, is there a gadget one can buy to plug into the motor to act as the key and throttle? Or should I just pickup a used control box off Craigslist?

Throttle you can just push and pull by hand. I'd set up a rocker switch to turn the ignition on and off and a push button switch to crank it.

I guess I'm not the most useful tool in the shed. How do I go from this plug to getting something to turn over.

That is the fuel line disconnect. You can buy that connector at a west marine or boat parts store.

I would prop the gear case upright with the prop shaft facing up and soak the propshaft/prop with PB Blaster/WD-40/Rust Buster/CRC/etc. for a day. Then smack it with a mallot. You can hit harder than you think without damaging anything. Use a piece of 2X4 between the mallot and the prop when smacking the prop...

Worst case scenerio is that you may have to take a torch and heat up the prop hub while trying to hammer the prop off...

If I was trying to get that prop off, I would face the prop and shaft vertically, wrap a ratchet strap (non stretching strap) around the prop a few times, and attach it to the ceiling or a rafter. Then I would make sure all the weight is on the strap. With the prop nut threaded almost all the way so the end of the shaft is not protruding, I would give it a few raps with a 2.5# sledge. Just like popping a balljoint. :bigthumb:

Good luck

^^^that sounds like a solid plan.

Edit SCT responded at the same time I was commenting to Il's idea. But both sound like good ideas.

Available cash at the time. I still had my Pulsare and I hate to part with too many Benjamin's at one time.

Haha, i know what you mean, I had been kicking around buying that boat for nearly ten years. I offered him 12500 cash this summer with the motors and he shut me down. That was all the cash i had on hand and was getting married in september, the 20th. I figured I'd buy it this fall when i saved a little more. I think you bought it the day of or right around my funeral,,, i mean wedding.:rof:

If you cant get the prop off. Make a 50/50 mix of dextron mercon transmission fluid and acetone and soake it with that. Worked wonders on my motor from the salt water corrosion.
