Checkmate Powerboats to be Dissolved

The boat market has changed dramatically over the last 10 years, If you are not doing center consoles or pontoons you have missed the boat...literally. So with them not making a change, they only had the one 25 CC they did not promote worth a crap you could see this coming...sad as the boats were and still are great !

The owners of Checkmate have not seen much interest in acquiring the Checkmate molds and intellectual property as a whole, as much as they would like to see the company continue rather than be dissolved. Therefore, offers will be taken on individual models rather than the company as a whole. On the side note, due to increasing demand for restorations, the owners of Checkmate Powerboats has decided to keep the upholstery shop open for all makes and model boats. If you have any interest in acquiring the Checkmate Company or purchasing the individual molds, please give us a call at 631-208-2933. If you would like to quote on upholstery work or to set up an appointment, please call 419-562-3881.

Paul,
Where have you advertised? There has been no mention of this in ANY trade or enthusiast publications. If you follow your same strategy for marketing building boats, as you are doing for selling the business, the result were seeing doesn't surprise.

I just saw an add for them in Professional Boat Builder Magazine.

I hope they have fun building the wood or plastic parts of the interior.Because I have been laid off for the past month. Dean knows nothing about putting a interior together. Thinks that he does but there is a difference. I was building them for the last 30 plus years think i know what i am doing.

Hey Alan, sorry to hear you are laid off. You might have to retire, buddy!
Give me a call sometime.

Alan, sorry to here this, wish you all the best. This seems like such a waste of skill and talent, not just yours but all who are out of work because of this.

I wonder if they will even do or try to do complete interiors or just do work on the skins? They probably aren't going to do any electrical/ gauge /dash upgrades. I'm guessing no carpet or Pirelli floors either. And like you've indicated maybe not even going to be able to rebuild seat bases or frames.

Just do the sewing for sunpads, armrests, seats in the cockpit and beds and benches below? Then maybe installation of that stuff only?

Small shop footprint and 1-2 staff?

Archives....

On a much smaller note:Checkmate has always been one of the companies you can call on older boats to find out how they left the factory .mike and kip would always go to the archives and give you info if asked when they had a second .what will happen to these archives ?? I’m sure there will be some Checkmate purists that wouldn’t mind owning the archive of their particular boat..myself included .

If Global Marine wants to see Checkmate Survive, they should be focused on pumping out Pulsare 2100's, Pulsare 2100 Bowriders and the Pulsare 2400 Closed deck and BRX. Complete hulls with no rigging. Let the public buy the bare hulls and rig them as wanted. That would save Checkmate all the long manpower hours and money involved with rigging boats and buying motors. Many current Checkmate owners have their own motors anyway and just want to upgrade hulls; not to mention, most of us are hobbyists and enjoy rigging our own gages, hanging motors, jack plates, etc. Build the the hulls, install the interiors and buyers will come! Heck, they could even build the boats in all white gelcoat and let the buyers have the hulls custom painted as wanted. Checkmate need to survive!!

Jup, I was going to say something similar, my thinking is the outboard boats like you've mentioned and maybe the new MX2600 or the ZT230BR also have a demand. But it's not like Global has no idea which Checkmate boats have been selling and how many or what boats they get the most requests for information about. They have to know what they are willing to spend to market Checkmate to improve sales and what they are willing to pay for rent of a building somewhere to build whatever boats they would be willing to keep.

While there is still some demand, they must have decided to get out because they don't see enough return for what effort they were willing to put in.

If this concept took off, do you think the dash should be cut for gauges or leave it up to the customers to layout their own gauge clusters?

It could be either. The Pulsare 2100's and 2400's have designated pods for the gages. It would be pretty easy for Checkmate to have them cut out as needed.

I’m planning to call them tomorrow to order the rest of the seat covers for my Pulsare. I will let everyone know if the upholstery shop is still in business as soon as I get ahold of them
