CT RIVER CHECKMATE "EVENT"

You can gas up at Petzolds or in South Glastonbury (Seaboard Marine), but the gas costs more on the river. What about the launch in Cromwell, on the west side of the river, just north of Harbor Park? I've never used it but it looks like a decent place.

If you are refering to the Arrigonni or Portland Bridge in Middletown as the "steel bridge", you are several miles north of Haddam Meadows by car.

Haddam Meadows is a decent place to launch and is free, but it can get busy and as with most free launches, you get some of the "less experienced crowd" ;). There are private marinas in Portand just south of Gildersleve that will run you $15 -$20 to launch.

Have fun, maybe I'll see you out there. :surf:

I looked that one up said new renovation didn t mention boat launch just park.

Might be a private launch, don't know much about it, just have to slow down for them right after a quick blast from the Arrigoni bridge heading north. I'm heading out tomorrow morning from East Hartford. Hope to run into a few of you guys this year.

Cops and make sure you follow the markers. That part of the river (Cromwell to Haddam) has many curves and bends and the shoals can sneak up on you. Also, from about the Portland/Arrigonni Bridge (train bridge) south through Portand's Marinas will be one BIG " no wake zone".

Heading out myself!

Fellow Club Member

Yesterday,July 23rd I finally ran into a fellow club member(502GTX) anchored at Dart Island, but the River was loaded with a lot of Checkmates, most not being members!!!! It rained early this morning but today is another go at the River hoping to meet up with some more Maters!!!

Ct River

Went out on the river Sat. Was nice.Launched out of Wethersfield, costed 20 dollars. Nice launch though.Went south but not to far ,wasn t sure where Gildersleeve Island was or Dart. checked it out on google. Get there next time. Seen one checkmate.Caught a few fish. Was a good time.See yah out there, Dave.

Yup, got out there Saturday too. I launched in East Hartford, caught a few raindrops as we headed south but we were having a good time so nobody minded. We were taking off after the no wake zone at the north end of Gildersleeve Island, just got on plane and the engine quit. I checked it for gas and spark.. no spark! Crap! I checked it for loose connections, burned rotor, etc and everything looked good. I figured it was the ignition module or the sensor in the distributor but since I don't have a spare of either on board I needed a tow. Lots of boats went by, and I'm not the type to start waving my arms for help, but I was a bit surprised how many guys would go by a boat anchored in the channel with the hatch open, owner wrenching on the engine, and not stop. A boatload of very nice people came by though and gave us a tow to Petzolds Marine which is probably 1/4 mile away. We gave them $40 for beer money and they were happy, but not as happy as I was for the tow.

I bought a new sensor, cap and rotor from Petzolds and we were back in business. Headed south to Dart Island where I ran into Franz in his beautiful cream and blue Convincor, saw a couple more checkmates anchored there as well. My girlfriends kids made friends with some other kids who came in a big cruiser and they spent the afternoon doing flips off the roof, about a 2 story drop! On the way back I saw a guy fishing in a Checkmate, about an 18 footer...maybe an 82 Predictor?

Predictor, that was us that went by while you were fishing. I have a white Convincor with black and maroon stripes. I was anchored at the north end of Dart Island Saturday, right next to the two huge cruisers. We swam down and checked out your orange Checkmate Hotdaddy, Nice looking boat!!

I was on the CT Saturday.:bigthumb:

Don't recall seeing you, but I got a late start due to a rough day on my Brother's Baja the day before! :o

Quite a few locals on this site, almost everyone that I meet with a Checkmate in CT knows of this web site. Pretty cool!

We got out again on Saturday. Did our usual run, launched in East Hartford and stopped at Dart Island for a while. I did see you pull in, HD, but I didn't get a chance to say hello before you blended into the crowd. Was getting pretty badly sunburned too and was hiding under a beach towel in my boat! We caught up with Franz in his Convincor on the way back north and couldn't resist the urge to engage in a few contests of speed. I had a blast racing him but let's say mine will need more work if I don't want to keep looking at the back of his boat!! I'm easliy drawn into a race though, whether I think I will win or not, I love it. Planning on going out again next Saturday.

Checkmate Owners compulsion to race!!!!!

It seems all Us Checkmate owners are always ready to hit the throttle to feel the awesome ride given by our well built rides, win or lose its always a thrill feeling the air rush bye!!! The only problem in performance boating is there is always something quicker, because the need for speed is a sure thing to us all!!! I have looked at many sterns frustrating the heck out of me and putting ideas of putting more ponies into my Convincor,to avenge the loss but with to much power comes unreliability, which just shortens the boating season !!!!

Dart Island

HD,I was wondering who owned that orange Checkmate of which I have seen 3 times now at Dart Island and will make it a point to find you next time your there!!! Looking at your name with the 300 opti on there I thought of you in a outboard but know the truth now!!! Great looking mate and color scheme HD!!!
