I'm starting to like Jet drives

Sterling Update

Transom wood was totally removed on Monday and I didn't even crack the shell, LOL! The Hammerhead scoop was ordered today, the new stainless steering wheel is in and looks good. Will start to epoxy in a few layers of heavy cloth on the transom Wednesday morning and my new gauges are on the way :thumb:

I'm having a card reader problem LOL! Will try and get some new pics up soon. Did get the first layer of cloth laid up Wednesday, it's starting to look like something now!

Sterling Project

I had to work today so didn't get to work on the hull but I do take parts to work with me each and every day. Getting plenty of cleaning, polishing and prepping done on all the parts that need to go back in :thumb:

My buddy has a 21' sleekcraft with a 460, aluminum heads, single plane "high rise" intake, $800 demon carb and every ford racing part you can bolt on it.. it only does 60 mph with 600 h.p. I am not impressed with jet pumps at all, my 202 BR Persuader 350 mag runs all over it.. He takes me out of the hole for a minute but I freight train his ass and pass him.. F*ck jet boats, I barley have half the h.p. and whoop that P.O.S when we race. Not too mention my boat is WAY heavier... I tow that jet in when it sucks up sh*t and grenade's.. My favorite part when we race is how that piece of crap jet burp's when it gets a tiny bit of air from a wave and he drops back another boat length.. I bought a $75 23P SS prop off ebay and gained about 5 mph, I cant Wait till we race again, its going on youtube.. lol!
Hey, sorry about the negatives here but those jet-ovator's throw a sweet rooster tail though!

You can bash em all ya want....a properly setup jet will smoke most on take off let alone break a seat out of it's mounts with the thrust.
I prefer outboards, but respect the jets since I had one for 6 years before going outboards.

Had a 460 in my taylor with a berkley pump all stock with a 650 on top it would run 77 all day long!

77 kilometers most likely, there is a chart that specifies how much h.p./rpm's/torque it takes to push those pumps and it will give you a formula to figure out speed and all that depending on size of the boat.. you must of had a 12' boat and a "blown" 460 to go 77, you would need like 700+hp..highly unlikely with that "boat anchor" ford bb (definetly not naturaly aspirated)..maybe a couple of bottles of spray would make that slug get up like that, no way just straight motor unless you dropped about 15k into it.. hey i just say it how it is, those things break, clog, and guzzle gas like a b*tch.. I will take a i/o or an out board over that junk any day.. Cool roost though :bigthumb:

I am not trying to roast on you guys, i just think those things are a waste of power. if my persuader 202 had the h.p. like most of these jet's it would probaly go about MACH 1..

my bad guys, I just whoop on my buddies sleek-craft and couldnt resist messing with you..

i dont know what you are smoking but i know what mine did and it wasnt in kilos!!!!!

Not to rain on your parade, but my 76 sleekceaft started out when I got it
at 56 mph. When I sold it with a 427 13:1 venolias and square port heads etc. I got 82 mph with a jacuzzi 12yj. Suck my wake!
Your boat would have been a loser for sure

Mine ran 69-70 all day long I only had 1 problem and that was the alternator came apart. But I cut the belt and still drove it back to the dock. I tell you one thing. NO O/B could catch it from 0-70. I do admit jets take alot of HP but no o/b or I/o is more fun to drive.

Mine does honest 70's. A buddy of mine had a 17 ft sleek craft tunnel bottom, stock I/O hooked up to a 350 also stock. He could not pass me. A whole lot depends on how you set up the pump. I've seen lots of guys with smaller boats than mine sink a lot of money building up a 454, stick it in there jet and just make a lot of noise. Then could not believe I only had a 396 with respectable horse power. You gotta at least start with the right impeller, it's like choosing the right prop. Then go for the correct performance items!

My pump was a jacuzzi with I think it was called a american turbine conversion. All the pump work was just done by Tom Morrow of Mississippi. I had a 455 with around 450hp and 500 fpt

Found Tom's page

He's the man and gave me a deal on a lot of parts even dug up some used parts for me out of his shed

Some Sleekcrafts are really heavy. My buddy has a 21' Sleekcraft Aristocrat that runs about 55 to 60 with about 400 hp on a fresh E pump. We don't really care how fast it is but I know one thing, fast or slow it is one cool old boat. I'm told that my Sterling / Rogers hull will run about 70 with mild 375 to 400 Hp. I don't have a clue what it will do with the new 600 Hp and the G pump upgrades and don't really care. Hell I'm not even putting a speedo in it LOL!

Are you sure you really have this project??? We have seen only a few pics, maybe you stole those from another site. :poke:
