I have a 1996 mercury 175 carborated. The oil injection was removed and the engine smokes pretty bad. It doesnt bother me but the girls in the bikinis in the back seat get light headed and start wining. any tricks???

Sounds like a 2 stroke running right to me. That's why people are paying big money for 4 strokes.

Just keep the boat moving a little when the motor is running and give the girls another beverage....maybe that's why they were light headed......

mine does the same. smokes a bit upon start up and while at idle. i like to zig zag through the no wake. it keeps the smoke away.

Almost all 2 strokes will smoke especially while running cold, especially mercs. I have an EFi and it still smokes at idle, its always gonna smoke but you could try a different type of oil.

some comanies oils will produce less smoke than others. I know i tried yamalube in my motor and its smoked alot less than the merc oil.

pulse 171, My 225efi w/oil injection smokes like a train at idle speed. I found that if I trim the motor to at least straight up and down, the smoke almost goes away completely. Only thing I can figure is that there is less back pressure on the exhaust with the engine trimmed up. Can't be sure, but it works for me. boatman

boatman is right, if the reliefs are to close to the water it will smoke more than if you trim up a bit, it does have something to do with back pressure.

Just get the girls to go to the bow and bend over to look for wood, not only will they not smell the oil, but you will also get a great view..LOL

What kind of 2 stoke oil are you using?? The better grade Quicksilver TCW3 Hi performance oils smoke less!! The over the counter/gas station oils smoke like a chimni!

You want to talk smoke. I know SMOKE! Try running a 92 Carbed 2.5 from merc racing. These engine's run at a ratio of 32 to 1.And at this time the carbs have never been rebuilt.Plus I rememberd the last time I had a new power head dropped on apx 5 yrs ago the nice mechanic installed larger jets in the carb to let me run cooler and keep the motor together longer.
That was fine when I ran it like a madman 50/60 days a summer and 90% of the time, it was only me.But now I'm lucky to get 10/15 days a summer with wife. Back then the wife would complain about the smoke and the stalling and I'd just tell her THATS HI-PERFORMANCE STUFF BABY!!.
Well were both about fed up with that amount of smoke. So this spring 2 more items go on the list. Carb rebuild & correct jets installed I should get my top end speed back also.
Tried amsoil no real differance and never comfortable with the whole 100/1 thing.
And I know what illmatic is saying, When ever theres a tail wind I had to tac right then left then right then left to keep everyone in the boat happy.Plus at idle speed I found that running down the jackplate and putting as much of the exshaust into the water was best and less niose(opened exshaust). And one more tip I trim the motor slightly forward letting any possible drips from the carbs to come forward not down in the carb.

Pretty good case here for leaving the oil injection intact. At idle they only burn 100 to 1 ratio. My 200 efi Merc doesn't smoke noticably at all, my carbed Yamaha a little.

I am in the same boat as merc245. Port work, larger carbs, high comp. Smokes like crazy. I have found that running just above idle cuts down on the smoke a bit.

"I love the smell of 2 cycle Merc in the morning......"

Try Penzoil synthetic oil, it really cut down on the idle smoke for my 3.0L.

Good luck.

i used to run the penzoil synthetic but was fouling up my plugs. i run the quicksilver now. seems to be a bit better.

I use Merc prem tcw3 ONLY. My mechanic is fanatical that I use It. What I did was in the off season I would buy 5 cases of the oil. thats 10 2.5 gal containers. Then break it down to qts. Not only saving apx.$1.25 a qt but I had my oil paid for the summer.Next I bought a season pass for the ramp.Than put my all gas on credit, The only outlay of money was the 10 bucks for the 6 pack of beer and a bag of ice & chips.
Thats how you boat on 10 bucks a day.
