The 21 Superboat:

Man you did it! you drove to Ca.
It reminds me of the 21' Nordics set up for ski race I see around the lake they run well into the 90s .
Was it recalibrated for high altitude? If the last owner was running at 6500 ft. You may have asked that question.
So what pitch prop does it have on it? Looks like you could use another drive shower.

I was thinking the same thing on the drive shower.. gonna drive it first and see where it stands with the current setup, I may have to look into an imco shorty, or maybe somthing else. I'm hoping to stumble across an old blackhawk for it... that or an arneson:drool:
I'll have to call AZ speed and marine to find out about the flash... I have the calibration code that they used. I know they were aware of the altitude that it was run at before they calibrated it.

He gave me a 27p Mirage+. I also have a standard non-plus 27p mirage sitting in my attic. That will give me a starting point. He used a worked hydromotive up at lake tahoe with good results.

Nick, That is a gorgeous ride. I have never driven a 21 SB with an I/O but with the motor in the boat it is going to be very well balanced. You have one for the ages!. I think I am going to have to take a ride out to Lima Ohio for a ride in it. I am kind of glad you did not buy mine 'cause I think deep down I dont really want to sell it. Best of luck with the 21!

Don't hesitate to let me know if you're going to be out this way, we can go for a ride!

Believe me, if things were going a little better, I would have brought your 21 back this way! Thats the nicest 21 out there- better than new.:thumb:

I'll trade ya':poke:

This boat had the Blackhawk drive on it orginally... I know for a fact that at least two were made that way. The other one ran 96 on gps from what I've read w/a stock 502. The first owner replaced the blackhawk with a B1, so if you look closely you can see the different decals on the drive/transom assy. I'd love to get ahold of a blackhawk drive. I know that props are hard to come by, though.
I asked Rick/FX10 over at oso about this boat... from photos I have found, this started to look like its the only one that superboat made with the blackhawk drive.... well, turns out it is. So, that means this is the boat that ran 96mph with a stock 502...:eyecrazy:
Big decision I have to make now is- wether to find an old blackhawk surface drive and a set of props- which are extremely hard to find and expensive! or go with my original plan of ading a imco-3 lower and having the upper modified for prop clearance. The imco will be way cheaper overall and I think that it will work very well- the prop will end up 2-2.5" below the pad... probably end up going with the imco, unless I hear good reasons not to.

I do know a guy that has a BH drive for sale and 3sets of props to go with it... gonna be pricey, though and my budget is looking like chit.

Hard to put a price on an extra 10-20 MPH!!!!! No-brainer unless it doubles the price of the boat....

The gain is 12 to 16 mph over a boat equipped with a stock bravo. With a shorty on this boat, I don't think the difference will be anywhere close to that...

Theres a ton of drawbacks to the drive, too- like idling at 6+mph, no prop selection, finding somone thats familiar with the drive if it ever needs worked on, rough water handling, and it has handling quirks. Costs over going with the imco -3 case is at least double, too. I could sell my bravo to offset costs some, but I'm still left with alot of compromises for some MPH...

Here is the good stuff! Its a balanced and blueprinted 509ci motor. 4.5"bore 4.0"stroke. It has edlebrock aluminum marine heads, 10:1 comp, msd ign w/5800rpm chip, an adjustable fuel regulator, imco exhaust, intake runners cut flush with plenum, crower cam (full roller valve train), Arizona speed and marine did the ecu and it has one on thier throttle bodies, 15qt oil pan. It has 46hrs on it since it was built (276hrs on hull). I'm the third owner. The first one lived in CT, then it went to Cali, now its in Ohio. Supposedly freshwater only. The last owner ran it a lake Taho (6500ft) and saw 78mph on the gps speedo. I figure 18% power loss at that altitued? If so, this should be a handful!

Thats the cleanest engine compartment I've ever seen on a used boat!

Thanks for the compliments... my 24 Super was almost as clean when I bought it- now its really clean.

On the 21, I've been tidying up a few things... very minor stuff, but makes a big difference overall- imo.

I found out that this boat was setup perfect from the factory with the Blackhawk- the opinion of the owner of Superboat... said it ran 92 on the limiter like it was on rails.

A really funny story about this boat is that one of the previous owners of my 24 had looked at it and drove it when it was for sale a long time ago... he ran 85mph with 4 adults in the boat and could take his hands off the wheel- said it drove like it was on rails! He says that if I can find another BH drive that I should buy it- thats how good it was... I'm still torn, but I trust that guy- so maybe I should bite the bullet and buy one???

He said that he would have bought my 21 when he looked at it, but the guy wouldn't budge on price at all, so he passed and ended up buying my 24 instead... I told him he has great taste in boats!:rof:Too funny!

Couple pics of the 24s bilge:

Well... I'm going to school for the next year, so any drive modifications will have to wait. I contacted Mr.Gadgets and let know what was going on. This is subject to change if the Exciter finds a new owner this spring- although I don't mind it if it sticks around, I would really like to get it into the 80s this coming season.

If nothing else, I'll get a base line in the 21 with the stock bravo this year and work on my ecu tuning with the help of a wideband O2 and precision marine... if it needs it. Thats going to be the extent of it for now, it looks like.

This last year was the roughest by far with my job and I can't pass up the oppertunity to get some more training that will give me another carrer option... also, the timing works out good for school- so, I figure why not? It drives me absolutely nuts not being able to work on plans that I've made for another year:brickwall:

ND continuing education is always a good thing in this economy. My job situation has been rough as well last year. We get training on new software constantly. Good luck in school.

So, today I drug the boat down to the local gas station and put $50 dollars worth of premium in the tank along with some seafoam.... came back home and put it on the hose... cranked over for a couple of seconds then fired right off. If it runs as good as it sounds this should be a really enterting boat- sounds tough! :thumb:

It idled for about 20-30min wwhile I was working on the tach... it will have to go back to Gaffrig- stepper motor seems like its shot. I checked it with another tach I have and yeah the problem is in the gaffrig unit. I also had to work on the manifold I had removed and sent off to get the wideband bung welded into... it was leaking at the gasket between the manifold and riser. I removed it and cleaned- installed with the other gasket and some high temp rtv. The weathe was changinig for the worse, so I don't know if it solved my leak, but so far so good with this boat!:surf:

Getting a few things done. Almost water ready, now... Oil and filter changed, drive oil is draining right now as I type, got the registration #s on, and new sea pump installed. I also decided to get by with the carpet that came with it for now, so I used plastic on the backside to keep the backer material from sticking to the floor again... it should work just fine. Livorsi couldn't repair the tach, but I found a new in the box tach that matched my instruments for 99bucks.
