Checkmate workmanship problem

Hey!! you guys ever seen a checkmate with stress cracks on each side of the motor on the antiskid pad on a Pulsar 20.5ft. and cracks at the radio dash this boat is new its a 2007 and the cracks are there from day one

Denis, put some pics up. I've had an 06 and 08 2000BR's with no stress cracks anywhere...I'd be pretty surprised if it was due to Checkmate's quality. Ain't sayin' it isn't...just that I'd be surprised.

I might be wrong but this is what I have been told by 2 owners of Combs built boats.

You have a Checkmate Boats Inc built checkmate. In 2008, they were sold and started selling boats as Checkmate Marine Inc. Doug Smith is the new owner and will only guarantee boats built by his company. In order for you to get it fixed, the PO of checkmate Bill Combs has to approve and pay for repairs to your boat.

You can call checkmate and ask for Kipp Combs. He should be able to assist you as to if there is a warranty or not. Kipp is a good guy to deal with as are all the others up there.

I might also add that my understanding is warranty is only for the original owner???

If I bought a boat new, and it had stress cracks from the start, I'd hope I'd notice the same day I got it home or soon enough to stop payment.

I'd surely try to get a remedy from the factory in the first few months, not at the five year mark? CM transoms are pretty strong, but anything can happen in five years. How can the factory be responsible at this point?

I had 2 new 2000br's which both developed cracks in the splash well area right behind the back seat in the corners. They were pretty much just gel coat cracks, but looked bad. Checkmate fixed both of them free of charge and it never happened again. I am not sure what they did to correct the problem, but it worked! The 2000 CB that I bought new last year is identical in that area to the br's(not the brx) and it has no issues!

the two stress I had at the back on skid pad where spoted 3 weeks after buying the boat and went back at the dealers with that problem and the dealer went bankrup with no notice so I call Checkmate and they said that Bill Combs had just sold the company to Doug Smith and if Bill is willing to look after this they wood fix it at the factory only so I went from Ottawa Ontario to Bucyrus to get it fix and they did a butch job!! 3 weeks later I had it fix there was another crack starting at the radio area but not anough to complain about but now that crack as grown and wounder if checkmate would fix that and what kind of a job !!! this crack is wright in front of you in the pass. seat? what to do??

I wish that would been the case but I paid cash for the boat and 3 weeks later the dealer goes bankrupt how lucky!!

I am the original owner and I e-mail Kipp and he said checkmate will not fix that but never mention if his dad is willing to pay to fix it the boat is 5 years old allready and only has 105 hrs on it

Some cracks are nothing more than imperfections from the mold and can be sanded, wet sanded and polished up.

You'll swear they are cracks, but they are often cosmetic and nothing unusual when laying up gel good and laying it thick.

The cracks that were in mine were just in the gel coat, nothing to do with the structure, but when they fixed it, they also added some glass on the inside for extra strength.

Denis if you need gel coat work,i know someone that is exceptionaly good at this.I've seen his work and it's invisible.
He is located in Grand-Remous.

Most of the time, cracks in the Gelcoat are from too much catalyst making the Gelcoat brittle. The cracks need to be ground out in a "V" and refilled with new matching Gelcoat. If you have access to the inside of the topdeck, adding a layer or two of biaxial glass with epoxy resin to the inside would also help keep the cracks from coming back.

Maybe wright
